I upgrade with windows store from 8 to 8.1 but files are missing

Hi,

Yes, as arnavsharma said, you can keep your files, settings when upgraded to Windows 8.1, only some Windows Store apps will need to be reinstalled from the Store, but it is always recommended to backup important files before upgarding.

If you choose to Keep nothing when you upgrade to Windows 8.1, please refer to this link to retrieve files from Windows.old folder

For issue about "no explorer", press Ctrl-alt-del, then launch Task Manager\File\Run new task, then type explorer.exe, OK. are you able to get the desktop and explorer now?

The desktop is blank ? No task bar as well?

Btw, what options did you select while upgrading to Win 8.1 ? We get 2 options, one to keep files and other one to fresh install.

Reboot the system in Last known good configuration and check the results.

You can enter the advanced boot option in Windows 8.1 by click "Change PC settings"\Update and recovery\Recovery\Advanced startup, then restart, you will get a shell menu to choose a startup mode, you can choose "Troubleshooting"\Advanced Options\startup settings...

I also suspect that this might be related with a corrupted user profile, have you test in another account? You can create a new account, and test if this issue persists.

Oh, yeah and an incorrect version of dism.exe.  How do these things happen?

What about  sfc.exe  /scannow   from a Command only boot?

May 9th, 2014 8:40pm

oh yes I tried sfc /scannow on admin command prompt it said it fixed files but the problem happened the only thing I can think of is to get some recovery disc to refresh or never turn off the PC

Is there a way I can get some recovery disc or something

The suggestion to get into the Advanced boot options menu was a good one.  Since you can start Task Manager (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-Delete) you can use it to do a shutdown.exe /r /o (e.g. in the More details view use the File Run... command to do that.)  I'm not sure if you need to do it elevated but that would be possible there too.

Good luck
