You really cannot expect to receive a flood of replies within 30 minutes of your original post. The Microsoft Automatic Update service should have offered SP3 as a critical update many, many months ago. However, you have not upgraded your operating system from SP2 to SP3 - so the automatic Microsoft Update / Windows Update services are no longer supported. Consequently, you will need to download and install SP3 manually. If your computer has an AMD or other non-Intel processor, your first step is to visitwww.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=230796A7-54D6-4C31-BDA3-EFD2F7E87A8C&displaylang=enDownload the "Update for Windows XP (KB953356) patch" to your desktop - or to a storage folder on your computer. You MUST install the KB953356 patch, before you try to install Win XP SP3.However, the patch is not required, if your computer has an Intel processor.Your next step is to visitwww.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=enDownload Service Pack 3 and save it to your desktop - or to a storage folder on your hard drive. Then, disconnect from the Internet.Turn off your anti-virus protection, and use the file you have downloaded to install Service Pack 3.Following the installation of SP3, you will need to reboot your computer.Turn on your anti-virus protection again, before you re-connect to the Internet. To install Internet Explorer 8, you should visit www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.aspx.Download IE8 to a location to your desktop - or to a folder on your hard drive. Then, disconnect from the Internet.Turn off your anti-virus protection, and use the file you have downloaded to install Internet Explorer 8.Following the installation of IE8, you will need to reboot your computer.Turn on your anti-virus protection again, before you re-connect to the Internet. Then, open Internet Explorer and navigate to www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us. Allow your computer to search for updates and install all critical updates. Finally, open Control Panel and double click on Automatic Updates. Make sure Automatic Updates have been enabled.
