I need a quick way to determine which server and share a file or directory resides on. Users report problems, with a path that does not help the admins determine which server is having the problems. We can eventually look up through DFS, but that's time consuming. I'm looking for an easy method (script, code snippit, command) that can resolve the a file or directory location to something like: \\<server>\<letter>$\<share name> for example: \\upsmyserver\h$\HR_PROD_SHARE GGStart

I'm not sure about this if it'll work, but give it a try - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/hh290814. Please revert back here it this does not help. we'll figure out something else to do. Hope it helps! Kunal D Mehta - a Windows Server Enthusiast | My first TechNet Wiki Article

Finelinks does not give the server or disk. If my guys get on the server, they get a list: \\<server name>\<disk letter>\<share name> For example \\usadat01\H$\USA_DATA_SHARE and the stats to go along with it. But we cannot let all support people have access to the servers, and there may not be a way to determin what server they are on. It could be in Houston, Dallas, Lagos Nigeria, London, and so on. Thanks for the reply. GGStart

Sounds like you are making the question more difficult than it really is. . In Linux, the command "df" will return the server and name of the disk on the server. We use this extensively on the cluster (19.9 Petabytes of disk space on the system).. I'm looking for a similar on Windows. We are not allowed to change the image on the servers, or generally add software to the servers. And do not want to give general access to all of the servers on the LAN to the support teams. . We need to know which server has the file or directory and which "physical" disk (or LUN)the file or directory resides on. . GGStart

I think this would be a more appropriate place to ask then: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/threads Or maybe the moderator can move this thread there. Sorry, couldn't help! :) Kunal D Mehta - a Windows Server Enthusiast | My first TechNet Wiki Article
