I need DETIALED networking help: VISTA will DHCP a 10.x.x.x address, but Won't DHCP an external from my ISP
I have VISTA Ultimate, all patches up to date. On a Dell D620. Normally on a dock. Here is the scenario: - DHCP from internal Wind2K3 box to get 10.0.3.x IP, no problem - DHCP form my ISP (Wave Broadband Cable), won;t do it. I have an XP box and a Ubuntu box that DHCP fine off the ISP. If I set the IP to the external one that works for XP or Ubuntu, it STILL DOES NOT WORK I spent 3+ hours with Microsoft support today, and nothing! Turn off firewall, turn it on, turn of other things, turn them back on, muck with netsh commands, etc. etc. etc. : Nothing! I know about windows, heck I wrote a book about Windows 2000. BUT this VISTA networking stuff is driving me NUTS. Where are some VERY detailed documents regarding the innards of the VISTA networking. I am hoping there is a group out there to help get the detials out about VISTA networking. Kine of like SAMBA did for the SMB protocol! Where is Luke Leighton when I need him!!!!! Any pointers are appreciated. Phil

Hi, This issue can occur if the DHCP server does not support the DHCP BROADCAST flag. Please follow this KB article to disable the DHCP BROADCAST flag in Windows Vista and check the result. Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 Additionally, here are some articles related to Windows Vista networking: New Networking Features in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb726965.aspx Enterprise Networking with Windows Vista http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc160883(TechNet.10).aspx Windows Client Networking http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/aa905087.aspx Windows Vista Networking blog http://blogs.technet.com/networking/archive/tags/Windows+Vista/default.aspx Hope the information is helpful.
