I keep getting intermittent permissions warnings that don't make sense and don't stick.
For the last couple of weeks I've been getting these intermittent errors when trying to save files. This has been happening on 2 separate computers (desktop and laptop) both running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. This didn't happen before so I'm wondering if it's a bug in one of the recent patches. The errors are always like the following (but occur with other files and folder locations: [Window Title] Bookmarks backup filename [Content] D:\Documents\Bookmarks backups\bookmarks-2009-10-27.json You dont have permission to modify files in this network location. Contact the administrator per permission to make these changes. [OK] Also, this always happens when saving to a local drive, these are not network locations. Furthermore, after clicking OK, I get back to the save dialog box, and if I hit Save again (same filename, same location) it will ask me if I want to overwrite the file. If I say Yes, it then proceeds to save the file without error. Note, the file is originally created with 0 bytes so if I don't choose to overwrite the file, the file will still be there but contain no data. Anyone else seeing this or have a fix?

Hi, This issue can occur by incorrect permission or virus. You can try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Grant permission to the current user profile via following steps. Take ownership of drive C and drive D Please Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. 2. Run antivirus program and perform a full scanning. 3. If the issue persists, please restart the computer in Safe Mode with Networking, and then save the file in this mode for a test. Meanwhile, please restart the computer to Normal Mode and upload the picture to Skydrive (www.skydrive.live.com) , and then share the link to me. Thanks, Novak

Thanks, Novak I suppose a virus is always possible, but I run NOD32 and have scanned for viruses I don't see any evidence of an infection other than this issue. Also, I think I need to clarify that although the error message mentions a network location, it is NOT a network location. This occurs when saving files to the local hard disks. I also need to clarify that the inability to save the file is both intermittent and temporary. A second attempt to save the SAME file at the SAME location from the SAME save as dialog box (the box was never dismissed after the error message) results in a SUCCESSFUL save. The initial, unsuccessful attempt generates a 0 byte file of the same filename, so the second attempt prompts me if I want to overwrite the existing file. As soon as I say yes, it saves succesfully. Again, to clarify, this happens with any file type, from various applications, to various locations. The the fact that a second attempt immediately after the first attempt is successful suggests that this is not a trivial issue with incorrect permissions, as a true lack of write permissions would result in persistent failure to save. It would also not be much use in sending you a sample file since this issue is not limited to any particular file or particular application. I have some suspicion that maybe NOD32 antivirus has some compatibility issues with Windows 7, but I'm not sure if that's the case. I did discover that preventing NOD32 from scanning my iTunes folder solved a similar issue with iTunes giving me nonsensical permission errors. So maybe this is a more general issue with NOD32?

Please restart the computer in Safe Mode and save some file in the same location for a test. Does the issue still occur?Regarding the issue, it can occur by incorrect permission or incompatible third party programs. Please temporarily turn off NOD32 and save some other files to check the result. If the issue is caused by NOD32, I suggest you uninstall completely and reinstall it.Thanks,Novak

Hello, I have been having the same problem with my Windows 7 Professional 64bit, also running Nod32 as my anti virus. I found that turning off the Real-time FIle System Protection solved this problem for me. Simply right-click on the icon in the task bar and select Disable Real-Time File System Protection. I think this may be a problem with the 64 bit Nod32 application and hopefully will be dealt with in a newer update. I hope this helps. Valdearg

Thanks for the confirmation. I also took a look at NOD32's forum and found a thread where many people are experiencing the same issue. So this does indeed appear to be a NOD32 issue. I'm not sure that disabling real-time scanning is the best idea, especially since I can always save my files after a retry. But I am considering ditching NOD32 for Microsoft Security Essentials. If MSE is as good as people say, I'm not sure there's much point in holding on to NOD32. NOD32 is pretty good, but this isn't the first time I've had compatibility issues with it.

I, too, am experiencing the intermittent "you don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission.” error. I am on W7 Pro 64 with three 2 TB drives; drive “1” is my main, or C drive. This is not a networked PC. This only effects drive 1. It is not folder or file type specific. I can be copy/pasting 20 items; all the same, all from the same source and it will randomly throw the error. If I click SAVE again, (same filename, same location) it will ask me if I want to overwrite the file. If I click YES, one of four things occurs: 1. It will save the item as a zero bit file. 2. It will SAVE the file. 3. It will save the item as a zero bit file but pressing SAVE a third time will create the actual file, overwriting the zero bit copy. 4. It won’t save and I have to go to another folder. On drive 1, I created my named user Login name/Admin with full control as part of the initial OS installation. This user does NOT exist on drives 2 and 3; they have only the default profiles. Drives 2 and 3 never experience this problem. This has occurred since the initial installation of W7, before it ever hit the internet. I have ghosted the machine back to original state, run all updates – no go. I honestly do not think a Virus could be the culprit. I also run NOD but think that turning off the Real-time File System Protection is counter- productive. Plus, NOD scans all my drives and this error does not occur on drives 2 &3. I am at a loss and could use some help, please.
