Hi roger harner, This issue may occur because of a problem with the Automatic Updates service. Here's an article that addresses this issue. Follow the steps listed in it to fix the issue: You receive an error message after a Windows XP-based computer runs an automatic update, and you may be unable to run any programs after you close the "svchost.exe - Application Error" error message dialog box Here's another post which addresses this issue and many users who have followed the steps suggested in the post have fixed their issue. svchost.exe- Application Error Regards,Divya R – Microsoft Support.Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.
