Same here 4 different machines in this house... all XP Sp3 devices... all running Norton IS 2010. Now... nothing changes on the machines in any regular way - other than Norton updates.... Could something recent from Norton have caused this to start here. We all think that 4 weeks ago we were OK, and now we all get this double shutdown problem. One machine here was newly built on 5th Dec - and its suffering the problem about 3 days after it was built....

While your issue very well could be related to Norton, none of the others who posted here have indicated they use Norton. The issue is most likely the result of one or more of your processes not ending properly when prompted to do so.Click on the link below and download User Profile Hive Cleanup from Microsoft. Install the software. This should help somewhat. If you still experience issues after installation let me know. Alternatively, let me know if it solves your issue as well.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=enI don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points. Sorry for the delay in replyingWell I have loaded the User Heap cleaner and that does make a difference. It sometime runs in milliseconds and other times up comes a black cmd box and takes 20 seconds or more... but then the machine does shut down.Sadly it seems I have to run this each and every time I shut down However - other machines in the house are also suffering - and yes they all use Norton....but almost at the same time as we upgraded Norton we purchased a NAS,... and each user has an account on the NAS. I wonder if this Seagate NAS has got anything to do with the problem. I have tried some tests of not using the NAS at all and seeing if that made a difference - and in no scientific way it seems like NAS usage is proportional to the time the Heap clearer CMD box is seen.... Alas - the problems dont end there. For the last 2 to 3 weeks - I now have to remove the power cord from the PC before it will switch off. This problem started almost exactly the same time as I started to use the Heap cleaner... may be un-related but it seems too close a time scale....So I am not deploying the Heap clearer to the other machines (yet)

Once installed it runs automatically in the back ground each time your computer is booted.Unplugging the computer is the equivalent of a hard shut down and can be detrimental to your system files. I recommend you perform a clean boot following the instructions on the link below. This is basically a process of elimination method of determining what software is hanging at shut down. I further recommend you perform the manual steps as opposed to the guided help. How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" stateI don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points.
