Reduce the number of programs that start up when you switch on the computer by downloading Microsoft’s Autoruns from herehttp://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx Go to the Logon Tab and remove the tick alongside the programs you don’t want to start.Alternatively, download/install the free Quick Startup from here http://www.glarysoft.com/qs.html?tag=download When installing the program, be aware of the ‘foistware’ Toolbar add on and when you've finished using it, uninstall it as it has served its purpose. Not only does it check for the necessity of startup programs but it can identify ‘nasties‘. To disable (recommended action) an entry, remove the tick alongside its name. If you are unsure about an entry and want to know more about it, highlight it and then click ‘More information’ at the bottom of the screen. To delete an entry from the list (it doesn't uninstall the program), highlight it and click Delete in the left pane.

Burr has given you a link to Autoruns. This is an excellent tool. Please note that deleting a startup item is not necessarily the right thing to do. You can disable and observe the effect of the change. This is a better way forward as it protects against you finding out later that it has resulted in a programme you rely upon not working correctly. Disabling is easily reversed. Deleting is not. When troubleshooting a slow boot you should always check to see that your system is error free. Look in the system log in Event Viewer for Warning and Error reports.Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer forErrors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48hours ago.You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaningof the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Descriptionare important.A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and doubleclick on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is abutton resembling two pages. Click the button and close EventViewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body ofthe message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting fromEvent Viewer.Another approach is to use Process Explorer.I suggest you download Process Explorer. For further information about Process Explorer see here:http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx This freeware utility performs a similar function to the Windows Task Manager but it goes much further. In Process Explorer please add a Column. Select View, Select, Columns, Process, Performance and check the box before Start Time. Next select "Show Processes from all Users" and click on the column header "Start Time". This will sort so that you can see start with the earliest first. You may need to click twice or three times. On my Windows 7 box the first item I see is smss.exe =Session Manager. You should then see a long list of items loading over a brief period of time. The boot process ceases on my computer with the loading of two AVG files ( my anti-virus is AVG 10. Before these two files is a uns.exe file which loaded this morning 2 minutes 20 seconds after smss.exe. Usn.exe is an Intel file so it may not be on your computer.Questions. How long does it take from smss.exe loading for the main files to load? What are the files arriving at the end and how long does it take for them to appear after smss.exe? Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Please identify all your security programs (usually they are responsible for slow startups). How is the PC's performance once everything is up and running?
