I have an active internet connection but cannot connect to internet
My operating system is xp professional x64 edition. I appear to have good network and internet connections but have extreme difficulty getting on the internet. Sometimes it takes two or three tries but sometimes I just give up after awhile. When I do manage to get on, pages connect very slowly and most of the time give the error message that it cannot display the webpage. This happens whether I am using I.E. 32 bit, 64 bit or firefox. I have two other computers in this same network that are not having this problem. This just recently started up until about a week ago everything was working very well. I have tried resetting winsock and ip with no luck. Does anyone know what is going on with this? 1 person needs an answerI do too

HiDid you scan the system for Viruses and other malwares? You can also try these two utilities to find out if something unwanted loads at Startup, and if there are Bizarre processes running in the background.StarrtUp & Process Explorer http://www.ezlan.net/infestation.html#startup http://www.ezlan.net/infestation.html#processQuirky 3rd party security suits can cause it too.Check the MTU too, Optimizing the TCP/IP Stack - http://www.ezlan.net/Internet_Speed.html Jack-MVP Windows Networking. Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage What you can try: It appears you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the Internet. Retype the address. Go back to the previous page.<noscript></noscript> Most likely causes:You are not connected to the Internet. The website is encountering problems. There might be a typing error in the address. More informationThanks for your reply. I tried all of the things you suggested to no avail. My anti-virus program (Avast) and Ad-Aware did not find any culprits. I ran EMsisoft anti-Malware, Procexp and your startup checker. None of these showed anything unusual or suspect. I even did a couple of system restores back to before this problem started. I am not having any problems with any other aspect of my computer except this internet and networking problem. What seems to be happening is that it is having a hard time finding proxy settings and website hosts. If I type a website address directly into the browser's command line it doesn't go to the website but returns a response as if I did a Google search. If it dosen't hook up to anything I get the message that says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage, It appears that you are connected to the internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the internet" How do you reconnect to the internet? I have three computers hooked up to my router and the router is hooked to a cable modem. The other two computers are having no problems with the network. I have reset the modem and router and also did repairs to the network connection. Doing these things seem to help temporirily (maybe), but no permanent fix. I also switched around the cable connections to the router but the same problem remains with the same computer. I have checked all the network, firewall and internet settings and have not found anything unusual of different from my other computers. This thing is driving me crazy. Help!

Here is an update on my internet connection problem. I didn't think my problem was with my router because two other computers connect to it worked just fine and even if I moved the cables around those two continued to work and this one with the problem still had the problem. Just for the ____ of it I took the router out of the system and hooked my screwy computer up to the cable modem directly and guess what. It is now working beautifully. Lightening fast no matter which browser I use. So I am happy now but puzzled about why it won't work in the router like the other two. Anyone got any ideas?
