I don't get how connect to broadband internet in Win7?
The good news is I finally have a driver installed for my FA311 LAN ethernet driver. The bad is I still cannot connect to the internet. Even though I select broadband it wants to dial-up for some reason. It calls my network "unidentified network".A little background. This PC was Win 2K until I installed Ubuntu Linux & deleted Windows. Ubuntu had no problem connecting to the internet from the start& still doesn't. Now I have installed Win7 RC on the 2nd HDD (still have Ubuntu on the 1st HDD) & had a tough time getting the proper driver installed for my LAN ethernet card, Netgear FA311. That appears to be fixed, but now there's a new issue. Maybe it's because I'm not familiar with Vista/Win7 (XP was my last Win OS) I'm not getting how to connect to my broadband. I might add that when I reboot to Ubuntu on the same PC there are no issues accessing the internet. My system is NOT wireless but LAN. The connection works fine when using Ubuntu so the connection is working in Linux but not on the Win7 side. BTW; what is WAN?Do I need to find aLANconnection? When I use the setup & select broadband it calls it broadband but acts like it's a dialup service, trying to dial a connection number. I don't get it!Please advise.George

Try Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Internet Options > Connections Tab and put a check mark in 'Never dial a .....'.

OK. 'Never dial...' is checked & applied. Now when trying to connect it still fails & says it will re-dial in XX seconds. Another thing; under 'Local Area Connectivity', bothIPv4 & IPv6 says 'No Network Access'. Do these need to be checked 'ON'?Also, I've read where the LAN driver may be usable but actually a Vista driver & Win7 installs but may cause my error in connecting. True?George

I'm still having an issue with 'Local Area Connectivity' here too. When I look at the 'Local Area Connection Status' window,I am getting the following results:IPv4 Connectivity:InternetIPv6 Connectivity:No Internet accessIPv6 Connectivity worked with Windows 7 Beta, but it is not working with Windows 7 RC.Some help with this issue sure would be appreciated.P.S. I am running the 32-bit OS on my HP dv6227cl laptop.Steve

Steve - anyoneWheredo you change IPv4 Connectivity:Internet & IPv6 Connectivity:No Internet access to 'Connect'?
May 30th, 2009 7:42pm

George,Here are the steps I take to get into the Connectivity options:1. Look for the Network icon located on the taskbar. For an example,my Network icon is located in the lower right corner of my monitor, close to where it shows the time and date.Move your mouse/arrow over each item on the taskbar until you see one that says 'Network'.2. Left click that icon and click on the 'Open Network and Sharing Center' link. That opens the Network and Sharing Center window.3. Once I am in that window,I look for 'Connections' and left click on the 'Local Area Connection' link.Clicking on that link opens another window, titled 'Local Area Connection Status'.4. In the 'Local Area Connection Status' window, left click on the 'Properties' tab, located at the bottom left side in that window. This opens another window, titled 'Local Area Connection Properties'.5. That window should display between 5-10 line items (depending on your PC setup),with check marks in the boxes next to each line item.I have all boxes checked in this window. That is where I have found optionsto change Connectivity for IPv4 and IPv6 connections...I hope the info helps.BTW,I'm still having an issue with the IPv6 Connectivity.I have the box checked for the connection in 'Local Area Connection Properties',but for some reason,it's still not working.Steve

Hi I have been fighting this for a week. If I fool around with it enough it will connect, usually when I go to device manager and tell it either to disable and reenable the connection or update the driver. For a while I just had to disable it and then run Diagnose but that doesn't work anymore. Now it only seems to work if I go to Device Manager through Control Panel. Some times I have to do it several times. For the last two days it was working fine but when I turned my computer on today is was out again. I have used restore, and reinstalled the drivers downloaded from nVidia all to no avail. This is frustrating because it is obviously possible to connect but it just won't do it and running diagnose just comes up with no solution. Since many people are having this problem I assume that they are working on it but why can't it figure out what my connection is. Windows XP doesn't have any problem finding my connection. Mike

Mike, this is frustrating! This is an old PC that I had doubts if Ubuntu Linux would install on. But it did & very smooth. No problems with the internet from the beginning & with Win7 there doesn't appear to be an end!We really need some help!

Well currently it's on an autoconfiguration IP address and not on one ofthe normal 192.168.0.0/16 (if behind aconsumer router)addresses. That physical address seems amiss and might be the cause if there's a driver issue with the system.Which FA311 NIC do you have; v1 or v2 (newest driver for both is at version 1.8)?http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1265

Ryan,The system couldn't find a driver at 1st. I did download the 1.8 driver but the system didn't want to recognize it. Late, I found a series of good drivers in windows/system32/drivers under Realtek.

Steve. All those are checked but I still get 'No Internet access' under IPv6 & 4.The trouble shooter says 'Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configutation. Not fixed.'How do you fix that? It's all set to automatic.George George,I have my laptop set up to configure everything automatically too. But,I'm still getting the 'No Access' issue with IPv6.Everything worked just fine with Win7 beta, but Win7 RC has me scratching my head trying to figure out what is amiss with the setup. When I run the troubleshooter, the results show that everything is okay, but in actuality, everything is not okay. One other issue I have iseverytime I start the laptop up,I keep getting a Compatibility error message from Win7,stating that the HP Quick Launch buttons are not compatible with Win7 RC.I'm wondering if this issue is somehow affecting the laptop in regards to performing as it did with Win7 beta.I'm hoping that MS and HP are working together on a fix for the Quick Launch incompatibility issue with Win7 RC.

It doesn't look like those drivers are signed. Try to install by turning off the Show Compatible Hardware optionunder Update Driver Software (Device Manager ): 1. Click Browse my computer for driver software (Locate and install driver software manually. ) 2. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer (This list will show installed driver software compatible with the device, and all driver software in the same category as the device. ) 4. Unselect Show compatible hardware and see which drivers are available. If it shows only Microsoft Corporation drivers, try selecting Have Disk... and select the folder where the FA311 drivers reside.

Hello George,It sounds to me like yourWindows 7 RC install isn't communicating properly with the DHCP function of your router. If you assign a static IP address this may help. Open Network and Sharing Center and click change adapter settings, right-click your network card and select properties. Scroll down and select Internet Protocol Version 4 and click properties. In the next window set the following values>>> IP Address:192.168.1.105(anything between 105 and 110 for the last 3 digits should work fine)Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0Default Gateway:192.168.1.1Preferred DNS:192.168.1.1( or leave the DNS field Blank)Hope this works for you.

Hi everyone & thanks for the advice. I won't be able to try these suggestions until late today. Truthfully, I'm about to give up on Windows. One wouldn't think connecting to the internet would be such a big deal. Using the same hardware on the same computer, it wasn't hard for Ubuntu Linux to access the internet, so why Win7? I went to my local Radio Shack yesterday &, wouldn't you know, they had the exact same FA311 on their shelves. Not to say it hasn't been revised over the years but still COMMON; not obsolete hardware! Hopefully, these suggestions will help. Thanks! George

Ryan & SaMcp1123, Neither one of these suggestions worked. The results are the same as before. I don't get it. George

Can you try uninstalling your nic from device manager and see if it installs a new one for you?
June 16th, 2009 5:37pm

My Ethernet board is an older FA311 v1 that used a National Semi chip. They never updated for Vista so it will not work in Win7 either. I have given up on Windows & have purchased Mac's.
