I couldn't join a domain (NT4) vista business workstation
I have vista business edition. Our domain controller is an NT4 machine. I couldn't join the domain. Here is the error I received: Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt. The domain name BIGBROTHER might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS. If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration. The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller for domain BIGBROTHER: The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR) The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.BIGBROTHER Common causes of this error include the following: - The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses: [[two ips here]] - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone: BIGBROTHER . (the root zone) For information about correcting this problem, click Help Steps I have taken: added Vista on domain controller using domain manager, logged in with administrator rights. gone to the local area connection properties - > configure - > Advanced - > Network address and manually entered a mac address. used secpol.msc to change: Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel data(always) from enabled to disabled. Network security: LAN Manger authentication level from ? to Send LM & NTLM - use MRLMv2 session security if negotiated "Norton Protection Center "came installed on my machine. Not sure if this is a partnership with MS or something that acer decided I wanted.I have now turned off all options in norton to make certain I have no interference from it that I might confuse with a Vista dialog or problem. Under web browsing the intrusion prevention had to be turned off not by clicking turn off but by clicking configure and turning off from in there. PITA.Turned off norton and everything worked fine, I have joined the domain. I wonder how many of the above steps were not necessary?
