I can ping Google but I can not browse Google in either IE or Firefox
This is an interesting problem that has persisted since 12/4/2008 google.com and 2 or 3 sites that I visit often (henspa.com, reinmex.com) are recently inaccessible to me. I can reach these sites from my wifes computer, no problem. She is on the same LAN. I have identical responses from IE7 and from Firefox. If I use the ip address for google, I get in fine in either browser. I did an ipconfig /flushdns. It did not help So, I can ping these sites, but I can not browse them. I can browse many other sites with no problem. If I try to use SmartFTP client for either the dns name or the ip address of reinmex.org, I get the following [20:39:49] Connected to 64.6.241.26. [20:40:10] An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine. [20:40:10] Server closed connection I get the same responses to everythingwith the firewall turned off In the event viewer I find this kind of a message: Faulting application googledesktop.exe, version 5.7.806.10245, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0001b1fa. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. I ran bought and ran RegCure and I downloaded and ran SpyBot, resetting the PC as directed McCafee finds no viruses. Where do I go from here

Hi, Firstly, please check the following: If you have any security software, please temporarily disable it to check the issue. If you have set proxy, please check if the settings are correct and you can also disable it to see if it works. Please try the following suggestions: 1. Ensure that the computer is using the correct DNS server for name resolutions. When the problem occurs, please run the following command: >nslookup >www.google.com Will the correct IP address be returned? 2. This issue can be resulted by the factor that some third party security software or firewall blocked the Windows XP being accessed. Lets perform a Clean Boot to check the issue. Clean boot on Windows XP ================ 1) Click "Start", click "Run", and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG" and click "OK". 2) Under the "Service" tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then click the "Disable All" button. In this way, we can disable all the services which belong to third-party programs. 3) Under the "Startup" tab, click the "Disable All" button. 4) Click "OK". 5) Choose "Yes" to restart the computer. 6) Check "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when Windows starts". NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please try to access the website again to see if it helps. 3. The issue also occurred if the IE settings are corrupted. Please try to reload the IE settings to check if it can work. Reload IE settings ============= 1) Click Start, Run, type: "INETCPL.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter. 2) Switch to the Advanced tab. 3) Click the "Reset Internet Explorer Settings" button. 4) Click Reset to confirm the operation. 5) Click Close when the resetting process has finished. 6) Uncheck the "Enable third-party browser extensions" option in the Browsing box. 7) Click Apply, click OK. Actually, since the issue is occurred on the Windows XP computer, it will be better to go to the Windows XP Forum for help: Windows XP Forum http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=2010&SiteID=17 Thanks! Nicolas, Thank you for your detailed reply. I performed the 3 steps you outlined. Neither the clean boot nor resettingIE fixed the problem, I think the NSLOOKUP information I received is logical, but I have no way of knowing for sure. I have pasted the answer below. Today, my wife's computer started to exhibit the exact same problem. It sound like she was recetnly infected with whatever caused my problem. Mcaffe, RegCure and Spybot do not fix it. I tried to buy Intelinet after their scan said I had problems that were not detected by the other software. When I hit the registration button, I was taken to a new window that acted like the Google window . "not responding" Unles you have further thoughts, i will head over the the XP forum as per your suggestion... > www.google.comServer: nr1febuinc.snfr.nc.charter.com (THIS IS MY DEFAULT DNS)Address: 68.119.176.4 Non-authoritative answer:Name: www.l.google.comAddresses: 64.233.169.103, 64.233.169.104, 64.233.169.147, 64.233.169.99Aliases: www.google.com

After all these hours of plundering the problem,I drove 1 mile to the gateway router that isconnected to the cable modem. (I use a wireless bridge to get high speed internet in an area that has no other high speed source of connectivity.)I reset the router and the problem went away.At least I learned something about pharming and the vulnerabilities of DNS servers...Stephen Keel
