I can access LAN, but not Internet
Hi, I'm having a problem to access the internet for a week now. It was working normally before and nothing has changed on my configurations. They had some sort of a "maintenance" on the same day the problems begun. I've heard they have made some "changes" on the network and after that, my Win7 and a co-worker Vista lost internet access, but the machines with XP are working fine. I don't think it's is a problem on our machines, but I don't understand much about network admin. Is there some setting that is default on 7 or Vista, but not in XP, that can be "blocked" by network administrators or something like that? Just in case, I tried some procedures on my machine (below) but without success. I'm using Win7 Pro, build 7600. NIC driver is up-to-date and working, since I can ping and browse any machine on the LAN. But I can't ping an outside network. What seems strange is that I don't get the usual "request timed out", but instead a get (pinging google, for example): reply from [10.75.241.29]: destination host unreachable ... and 10.75.41.29 is my IP I've just installed Win7 Pro x64 on another machine and I get the same problems. - I've disable firewall and there is nothing installed, except the drivers. - LAN access is ok too - IP configurations are static, and values of IP, mask, gateway and DNS are ok, since they work on XP - DHCP and IPv6 are disabled - Tried openDNS without success - Tried netsh int ip reset and ipconfig /flushdns , also without success Any thoughts are welcome and sorry for any mistakes, since english is not my native language Thanks

I have the same issue. Started after automatic update from MS rebooted the computer last week. I can ping the router, can resolve URL's via the router, just cant ping URL. shows same error. Vista laptop (2 off) work fine as does mobile device.

Who is the "they" you are referring to? This is a work environment, not a home environment, right? If so, contact these "they" people you referred to and ask them what they did and how to fix it. It's unlikely to be anything specific to your computer since two other computers (a Win 7 and a Vista) are having the same problem. Most workplaces have an IT department that can help with these kinds of problems. Meanwhile, what does ipconfig /all tell you? Click on Start then Run and paste the following into the Run box, exactly as show, including double quotes: cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt" and press ENTER . A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close. @Ztrucker: Really sorry about that. I'm in 3 different forums trying to solve this and i sometimes i forget about some info. Yes, it is a work environment, but i can't really count on the people who runs the network. Some of IT troubleshooting i need resolve myself, as i have permission to install OS, configure it and have the some configs for the network (like ip, gateway, mask, dns). I've tried talking to network administrators but they couldn't solve, and didn't show much interest in solving it, as they said the configs on their end are ok, and have not changed anything on the "maintenance". I've heard from other sources that they are still having problems and are consulting outside people to solve this. What I've seem so far, from other forums is that it doesn't appear to be some "blocking" issue. I've set my ip, mac and machine name on another machine with XP and it works fine. I'm guessing it is some issue with the gateway. Even though the value is ok, i can't ping it from any machine, XP nor W7. But on XP i get a timeout, and on W7 i get "reply from 10.75.241.29: destination host unreachable" which is my ip, not the gateway. And on XP i still can access the internet. What I can think of now is that XP overlooks some network setting, while Vista and 7 don't, and since something is not ok, they can't reach the gateway.... makes any sense? I'm trying to find out if there is such setting, anything that is different on XP, but the same on Vista and 7. As you might see below, the "route print" command returns a little different from XP, as in 7 i have gateway "on-link" and on XP i have the values that can be the gateway itself or the loopback, like i have in the "interface" column. Tomorrow i will ask if they can change at least the gateway settings so it can ping back. Anyway, thanks for the reply... below is the ipconfig /all and the route print Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Ensure that the computer is using the correct DNS server for name resolutions: Please run the following command in a command prompt: >nslookup >www.microsoft.com (You can also try other URLs.) Will the correct IP address be returned? 2. If this computer is connecting to a router, please bypass the router and connect to the network directly to see if it works. (If you are using PPPoE connection, you may need to establish the connection from the computer.) Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Destination Unreachable is usually a routing issue. Your Default Gateway is on a different network. Get the correct default gateway and apply that.MCSA Windows 2003 MCP Windows NT 4 Workstation

@Nicholas: DNS is correct, since it works on other machines (XP only). nslookup returns timeout @twilliamsen: i think it's a gateway issue, but the gateway (10.75.240.1) is correct. My subnet ranges from 10.75.240.1 to 10.75.241.255, as defined from subnet mask. For some strange reason it seems i can't reach the gateway, so the problem is before the DNS. I just don't understand why it's affecting only Win7 and Vista

I missed something. You are pinging your own IP and getting destination unreachable. This is the TCP/IP stack that is broken. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your card? Do you have two cards installed(including any Wi-fi)?MCSA Windows 2003 MCP Windows NT 4 Workstation

yes, i've reinstalled NIC cards and update drivers. but I didn't ping my ip, but the gateway. But the return i got was "reply from [my ip] dest. unreachable" Just now i've learned that is a "virtual gateway", and that's why i can't ping it. The difference when pinging the gateway is that in XP i have timeout, and in 7 i get this destination unreachable, but from my own ip. I going to check something with the network people, and i will post more later

Problem solved! A guy on another forum told me to check the arp table and there it was. The gateway entry on the arp table had the MAC wih all zeros and type invalid. I removed it and add a new static entry with correct values. Thanks for all the replies

We have the same problem in my organization, W7 and Vista can reach the machines on the same LAN but not outside the gateway. It not happen all the time and when fails, the arp entry for the gateway is invalid. Set a static entry is a short cut but not the solution. The point is, Why W7 and Vista fails while XP or Linux machines work it ?

I have not been able to set the arp entry with arp command in my W7. I have had to use netsh: c:\>netsh netsh>interface netsh interface>ipv4 netsh interface ipv4> netsh interface ipv4>set neighbors "Conexión de área local" "163.117.139.2" "00-19-a9-2f-ec-00" where "Conexión de área local" is the interface name
