Normally when I participate in a beta test I get rewarded but Now I am being penalized. Please Help. I pre ordered my surface pro 3 so it is one year and one month old that puts it out of support by one month. This is not fair my beta will run out and I can't reinstall 8.1...Please Help!!!

All attempts to restore 8.1 fails and Win 10 beta will not update to Win 10 because windows update fails every time. Every attempt to win 10 from DVD or USB ask for product key. I have no key. This is a Surface Pro 3, It came pre installed and is supposed to be embedded on the motherboard. I guess my device will become a worthless piece of hardware when this beta expires. All because I participated in the beta test and Microsoft refuses to give me a product key. I have been encouraging people to get a Surface Pro 3, I guess that was a mistake.

Can you be a bit more specific?

Did you clean install using the ISO?

  • Do you want to continue as a Windows Insider and keep getting preview builds after 7/29?
  • Or do you want to upgrade your Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system that has been getting Windows 10 Insider Preview builds to the 7/29 release and stop being an Insider?
I want to continue as a Windows Insider! If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. Youre already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but youll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires youll have received a new one. Since were continuing the Windows Insider Program youll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program well upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well. I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29. If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire. http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/06/19/upcoming-changes-to-windows-10-insider-preview-builds/

To find an embedded windows 8 key to use for windows 10, try this tool:

http://www.nextofwindows.com/download/WpKey.zip

Click the MSDM key button to show the key in the bios.

Hopefully you should be able to use this to activate windows 10 pro or windows 8.1 again?

You may need to use slmgr /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

You do not seem to understand.  There are no unique keys in win 10.  Pkeyui will show him a key that will not do any good because the machine must be upgraded first to validate the underlying OS.  If clean installed before upgrading the only option is to re-install the previous OS or buy a key.

If the OP has Pro his key from PK will end in this  9MPGT-3V66T because it is the same key for everyone.  The validation is encrypted and store in the cloud

Yes but he can use the key extracted from the bios to reinstall windows 8.1 first?

After the upgrade what key do you think is stored in BIOS?  The Old key or the new one from win 10?  Not much room to store multiple keys in BIOS.

Surely the UEFI key is read only? It would make no sense if the OEM key can be deleted?

Once he extracts it he can activate windows 8.1 again and go from there?

I will test this on my SP3 and get back to you
