I can't change the network key on Windows XP. Keeps reverting to an 8 character key.
I changed my routers wireless security from WEP to WAP2 and also changed the network key.I went into my Window XP network settings selected the wireless network and made the necessary changes there but after I hit ok to save and I reopened the properties for the network it still shows the network key that is 8 characters long which is not the new network key that I entered.I removed the network and added it again but it still wont save the new key it just keeps using an 8 character key.I can bypass this problem by unselecting the "Use Windows to configure my network settings" and letting my wireless adapter manage the network settings. This allows me to connect to the network. But If I restart the PC I have to go back and unselect that option again in order to connect.XP is completely updated as are the drivers on the internal wireless adapter.Ok I just figured out why XP is taking the new key, I am using a 128 bit key which XP does not support. So now I just need to figure out why XP keeps resetting the "Use Windows to configure my network settings" check box to selected after I restart the PC.

I have the same exact problem. Plus, I can't tell what the current password is that Windows has in that field because it is display-protected. But in any case, I should be able to see what is in there and change it to whatever I want for that specific wireless network. What's going on with this? I hate it when you people at Microsoft think you know more than I do as to what I want and need.

HiAssuming that the adapter is WPA2 compatible, and so is your version of XP.Make sure that the Wireless does not install the vendor's Wireless manager, and it runs togather with Windows WZC.Maybe this can Help, http://www.ezlan.net/wireless.html Jack-MVP Windows Networking. WWW.EZLAN.NET

My problem with the network key is that I am using a 128 bit key which XP does not support that's why the key is always 8 characters or 64 bits.I think I figured out how to prevent the WZC from messing up my wireless adapter.I'm going in to Windows Services and disabling WZC there, pretty sure that will work but will have to try it tomorrow because the PC in question is at my dads office.

Thanks for the reply,Everything is WPA2 compat. The guy who installed the wireless adapter also installed the wireless manager. The wireless manager was set to work with WZC.
