I can't access to my folder. It has turned to a back-up thingy.
Hello TechNet forum users, Exactly one week ago, I was getting "You don't currently have permission to access this folder." error. I managed to solve it by getting ownership. Today, Win7 Backup started, I cancelled it because Norton 360 is in command of backups AND backup process freezes after %25, nothing happens. I see white bar on green progress bar moves, that's it. After cancelling it, my valuable (same folder as previous problem) folder turned into a strange thing. Highlighted folder: http://gyazo.com/d1c91c198701c4ea28fd7c4689a67ea6.png?1341236461 When I roll my mouse over it, it says "empty this folder" from pop-up. When I double-click to open it says "Select an option for selected backup." : http://gyazo.com/772eed61ac1ac3763bb2c86a5463156f . And nothing happens on these three options. So, I can't do anything. It acts like a backup file. I gave the backup one more shot to see if problem gets solved, waited till backup to end. It ended succesfully for first time. I tried to check my folder, same "Select an option" thing, but this time options actually work. What should I have to do to save my precious folder? Many many thanks in advance.

First of all, thank you for investing time. I already have the ownership, but I double-checked if my rights are safe. I'm pretty sure I have the ownership rights. I also have full control on my folder. But according to your solution, I have to open a folder to delete desktop.ini or copying process, a folder which I can't open. Automatically, this solution doesn't work for me. I also think I've found out what is causing the problem. My account name is "Egemen". And I have a folder named as "Egemen" in my external HDD. As far as I know, when W7 backups, it gives the account's name to backup package. W7 automatically selected my external HDD for backup packages target place. W7 backed up, gave the account's name - Egemen -. Placed backup packaged to ex. HDD, and decided to put backup package in front of my folder. So, folder is somewhere behind backup package. We can be sure my files are behind of the backup package, because if I try to copy Egemen backup-typed file, I can see my files are getting copied too, I can see their names. But after copy progress, whenever I double-click, the same backup options. If we can find a way to seperate those two, or find an effective way to recover overwritten files, I think we can solve the problem. I've tried Pandora/Panda recovery (those are for deleted files however.), and that didn't give a result because files weren't deleted. As I said before, command line or copying didn't work. I also tried to open that folder from another PC, it acts like backup package as usual. This is files current situation: http://i.imgur.com/d6ISr.png If I double-click: http://i.imgur.com/5wUtE.png If I rename then double-click: http://i.imgur.com/o6rG4.png Here's controls of all user groups: http://i.imgur.com/R7wWH.png And every advanced properties sections: http://i.imgur.com/TjNK1.png http://i.imgur.com/kizdr.png http://i.imgur.com/iYub8.png http://i.imgur.com/st5gm.png I really hope there's a way to recover my files, because all my essays, end-year studies, project and documents are in that folder. Thanks in advance.

Hi, If you Right-Click that folder, Can you see Open option listed in Context Menu? If so, hit Open to get into the folder. Juke Chou TechNet Community Support

Hello, right clicking and selecting Open from menu was the first thing I did in this case. I've tried it tons of times, it didn't work. I tried rebooting, then doing that, it didn't work again. Tried to restore my system and open folder in various ways (Open with 7zip, right click, direct double-click, command line) failed again and again. After that restore, Norton screwed up as usual. I let it update, and read your suggestion. I was like "I tried this many many times and it doesn't work.", but said "It doesn't hurt to try it one more time.". Rebooted my system to updates take effect, then right click -> Open worked! As soon as I was able to open my valuable folder, I started to backup my files immediately. Currently, I'm taking a backup of backup, I can't know when I'll get a folder error. Thank you for helping me to recover my important folder, thank you for taking your time sir. P.S.: You maybe can add "It doesn't hurt to try something again." to "How to ask a question efficiently in TechNet forums." thread, because that sentence is right and it can save a lot of time and effort. :)
