I can't access ANY webpage from ANY browser! Help.
I've tried Google Chrome, Safari, and IE8, But no matter what, every webpage I try going to, none of them appear. But I have internet connection.Edit: The REASON I know I have internet connection, is because I was able to update my outdated AVG Free, and I was able to log onto IMVU w/o problem.

How do you know you have an Internet connection? Please give some more information: 1. How do you connect to the Internet? Cable? DSL? Dialup? If you have a cable/DSL modem, are the lights on? 2. If cable or DSL, is your computer connected directly to the cable/DSL modem or do you have a router? 3. Do you connect wired or wirelessly? 4. Please do: Start>Run>cmd [enter] The command prompt will open. At the command prompt, type: ipconfig /all [enter] We're interested in the IP address of the network adapter you're using (ethernet for wired, wireless adapter for wirelessly), the IP address of the gateway, and your DNS settings. Still at the command prompt, please type: ping www.yahoo.com [enter] Do you get a reply or does ping time out? 5. And finally, give the answers to: The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't? The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this? Be sure the computer is clean: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_MalwareMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

It's just plain Malke and I'm a woman, so not a "Sir". 1. What happens if you connect the laptop directly to the router with an ethernet cable? 2. Can the laptop connect wirelessly to a friend's wireless network? 3. Can a friend's laptop connect wirelessly to your wireless network? 4. What wireless encryption level do you have set? How old is your laptop?MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Hello Malke. I hope you've come up with an answer for this since 12/18/09, as I'm having the same problem: I'm definitely connected to the internet (lots of reasons for knowing this - pings get replies, I can do things on the internet that do not require a browser, tray icons indicate I'm connected with a strong wireless signal, I can VPN to my company's shared server, etc.), But NONE of the browsers on my x laptop will load AT ALL. Double-clicking on the browser's icon/shortcut, or on its executable in Explorer, produces a half-second of the hour-glass, then nada. This happens with IE (the default browser when it was working) and Google Chrome, which I recently installed to try out. Also happens with Firefox, which my IT suggested I install to see if the same thing happened. it did. Happens when connected wirelessly at home, when connected wirelessly at the office, and when connected at home with an ethernet cable to the router. The PC that's doing this is a Dell Vostro 1510, purchased new from DEll August 2009. Only other problem i've had with it was, had to disable Goggle desktop indexer, as it stopped the pc , requiring reboot, several times/day. It's running XP, SP3, with IE 7 as the default browser. Our tech has run multiple anti-virus scans (symantec endpoint), malware and trojan detection/removal programs. All come up clean. Have tried a bunch of things, like reseting my IE settings, re-enabling startups that had been disabled, and changing services that were on "Manual" to "Automatic," with no success. (Even a little.) Most aggavating, and it seriously handicaps the work I do for my job. I'm a new kid on this block, btw. Can you please help? Thanks! JDFerguson

Some viruses/Trojans/rootkits can hide from anti-virus programs running in the infected operation system, and are known to close windows that have titles off of a list in the virus... you may want to do a scan with something like "The Alternate Operating System Scanner"
