I am unable to rename file or folder using F2 key.
I am unable to rename file or folder using F2 key. The only way to do it is, using mouse's right click then rename. But my keyboard's F2 key working to enter in BIOS setup. Why it is not working in renaming?

This issue happen to each and every folder or file even you create it ? This probably means that you are trying to change the name of a folder that either a system folder (special Windows 7 folders that cannot be moved or renamed), or that this folder was created by another user who has limited the permissions on that folder (in which case, simply ask this user to rename the folder for you). Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. what keyboard do you have? there are keyboards where the F keys have a second function, eg multimedia play stop and so on. those keyboards usually have a key to toggle between the two functions.

It is not like that. I am unable to rename files which have been created by me. (e.g) if I create new folder on my desktop then I cannot rename it using F2.

F2 key is working on windows XP. That means this issue is only with windows 7. I have checked that, it is also not working in MS Excel. What to do?

So, is this a PS\2 connection keyboard? Check the BIOS for the motherboard and confirm that the most recent is installed. You can test by clicking Start->type osk->select it from the results. Use the mouse to selct and object and press F2. Does the renaming shortcut work then. It could be the motherboard BIOS, a chipset driver or a loose connection. The general shortcut works on a both a PS\2 and usb type on two different Win 7 machines that I tested. Hardware and Win7 are not happy. Find the setting in the BIOS for Plug & Play OS and set it to enabled. Let Windows 7 handle the IRQ assignment.

Amazing thing happened !!! After testing with OSK. Result was same. Then, I was checking drivers of chipset etc. They were up to date, then for BIOS checkup I reset my machine. Eventually, I missed to press F2 on bootup because of TV. When windows 7 was going lo load startup programs, I just pressed F2 on a desktop shortcut to make sure it is still not working. BUT, IT WORKED this time. Then after a while, when all startup programs being loaded, same condition as before. So, I came up with that, something on startup causing this problem. I started disabling startup programs one by one, then found one culprit, that was babylon dictionary, which uses F2 key for manual spell check in a document. So, I have changed it's shortcut key. FINALLY : F2 is working for renaming. Actually. I have found solution myself. I believe, that could not happen without your support. Thanks Guys.Mateen.

good find! I overlooked that another application may override an existing setting. Thanks for a tip for future troubleshooting. Best Regards and Good Luck!

wow! After searching so many weeks i finally got here and solved this F2 issue in 2 seconds. THANKS! However i would like to raise an annoying issue of programs that take control of common keys (without asking the user or even notify him) during installation and by that cause contentions and malfunctions. Actually, Babylon is the king of takeing over your stuff. Shame on you Babylon.Shame on you.

If you have HSS Hotspot Shield installed, un-install it. The F2 works.
