You should not be running two antivirus programs. Choose between Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast Security and uninstall the one you don't want. Along with a good antivirus and the built-in Windows Firewall, on XP I like to have the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed. Update/run it manually once a week or so. You don't need anything else except a smart user. http://www.getsafeonline.org/ https://www.mysecurecyberspace.com/ http://www.getnetwise.org/ http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/staying-safe.pdf Too much security is detrimental: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/Too_Much_Security.pdf MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Thanks for the info- very helpful- malewarebytes-cleaned 13 infections out-I did not know that more than one antivirus was detrimental- I'm glad there are free maleware, virus sites on the internet- it is hard to wade through all of them and try and decide what to install-so much of this is very expensive but i kept the microsoft security systems program and deleted the avast one. Again great help

I'm glad that helped you but I'm concerned by your "so much of this is very expensive" comment. If you get popups telling you that you're infected and you must buy something to clean them, that's not legitimate. Good Windows security does not have to be expensive (unless you get your machine in such an infected state that you need to take it to a professional and even then most of us are reasonably-priced). Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, Avira, BitDefender - all good antivirus solutions which are free. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SuperAntiSpyware - good antispyware solutions which are free. Windows Firewall - built into all versions of Windows since XP - free. Smart user practicing "Safe Hex" - free. ;-) and cheers.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
