IE 8 appears to randomly respond to URL links differently.
I have tried viewing the web pages in compatibility mode and not, tried adjusting security levels and trusts, with no change. IE 8 responds to a click on a link which clearly shows in the status bar to be a valid URL by trying to open the target .asp page in the list html editor. The system is a Intel DX58SO, EAH3870x2 1GB video, 6GB Ram 80GB SATA system drive. Windows 7 Build 7000 other then desktop layout on four monitors and member of an AD domain all is configured with default settings. User privaledge Administrator. What is making this a frustrating issue is it is not occurring on all web sites. I can open the sites that have the issue i.e. www.amx.com in IE 7 on Vista x64 same hardware and have no problems at all. Compared settings of the 2 systems and could not see any discrepancy between comparable settings.

I cannot answer the question you presenthere, but I will be anxiously awaiting for someone knowledgable on the subject to answer it for you. I also have the same problem. IE8 simply refuses to open seemingly random websites. I can close IE8 and open Firefox (which I despise) and go right to the site without problem. I can then close Firefox and immediately reopen IE8 and will again get a notice that Internet Explorer is unable to open the webpage. In the notification window that Internet Explorer displays is an offer to try to determine what is wrong with MY internet connection. Of course, no problem is ever identified. This problemoccurs quite frequently (several times a day) and exists on the IE8 version that is attached with Windows 7 beta. I also have been experiencing a larger thanusualnumber of "cannot display requested web page" errors on IE7 on my networked Windows XP SP3 desktops. Perhaps a recent "security upgrade" has caused this newfound instability???? Again, Firefox has no obvious problem with these sites whatsoever. Can I give some more specific information to these problems for someone to be able to offer a solution?John Shelton

Hey JD and John, I'm unable to solve this current problem, but IE8 on Win7 and IE8 for Vista are 2 different versions of Internet Explorer, and IE8 for Vista is much more stable than IE8 for Win7. What I would suggest is to wait for Win7 RC and try out IE8 then. It shouldn't be giving you all these problems. P.s: I use Firefox when I'm on Win7 Beta 1. IE8 is too buggy for my liking. Hope this helps.Jabez Gan [MVP] - http://www.msblog.org Contributing Author for: (Sybex) MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration Study Guide: Exam 70-643

Greetings,as Jabez Gan said, theIE8 build that Windows 7 installs is a bit "crappy". I have experienced same issues with early beta builds of IE8 in Windows Vista. But the final version fixed all those problems. Looks like we'll have to wait for W7 RC which will install anewerIE8 build.Regards,W7 Beta running on an AMD Semprom 3200+ (1800Mhz) with 2 Gbs of RAM and a built-in Nvidia 6100 VGA, and mate, it runs like a charm! And now on my VAIO FE31M Laptop.

>I have tried viewing the web pages in compatibility mode and not, tried adjusting security levels and trusts, with no change.I'm believing you, so this following test is only a related suggestion:Under tools, options, security, uncheck the box that says "enable protected mode".Anecdotally. a popular Microsoft websiteasks you to sign in, and if I am using protected mode , it will open ten or so tabs and then throw an error that the page cannot be displayed. The other nine (or so) tabs mention something related to enabling cookies. My posting this is premature because I plan to go into XP and trya few pageson the "final" version of IE8Update: They've either fixed some of the webpages or I don't remember the right ones. Protected mode still ignores the fact that you just signed in, or it doesn't, signing you in perfectly, which was sort of your point. All I Cansay is that IE8 in xp which does not have(?)"protected mode"seems to work better without protected mode. And now some gratuitous self-flagellation, just in case: @Chitbilldon't you know the xp version does not have "enable protected mode?" (Sorry, no) and that discussing yada blah is off-topic and in the wrong group (um,?) You are hereby (forthwith, whatever) admonished
