IE8 'Add To Favorites Bar' not working
I have a recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate. I was also running IE8 under Vista. I have what is really a trivial issue but puzzling. The 'Add To Favourites' icon (the star with the green arrow on the left of the Favourites Bar) no longer adds the open web page to the Favorites Bar when clicked nor does the 'Add To Favorites Bar" command when selected from the Favorites drop down menu. I have uninstalled IE8 using the 'Turn Windows Features on or off' section and then re installed it and also used the reset function in the Tools/Advanced section. Anyone else experienced this or even better solved it?Steve

In addition, you can perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Please right click Internet Explorer toolbar and select "Favorites Bar". Then click "Favorites" menu and click "Add to Favorites Bar". Does it work? 2. Reload Internet Explorer 8 settings via following article. How to reset Internet Explorer settings 3. Create a new admin account and then log on the new account for a test. Can you add link to Favorites Bar now? Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input, From your suggestions number 1. This will not add it to the favorites bar either 2. I have tried this but no change, I also tried removing and reinstalling IE8 as I mentioned in first post 3. I will try this when I have a few moments. Thanks

Hi NovakI tried your suggestion 3 and indeed the 'Add to Favorites Bar' button works fine in the newaccount but not in the old acount. Do you know if there are any policy or registry settings that would affect this? Thanks

Hi, Since it is working after using a new profile, I suspect that there might be some files corrupted in the old profile or there is some software conflict with this. Based on the current situation, you can copy the files to your new profile: Fix a corrupted user profile For the IE 8 related Group Policy, I would like to share the following with you: Group Policy and Internet Explorer 8 Thanks. I have also experienced this problem... but it has been intermitant... it only seems to occur after using multiple tabs... if I log on and imediatly open a IE8 window then go to a page... and add it to favorites... it works... then once I have opened any new tabs it stops working.

Thanks for the input I have just resoved this problem. I'm not sure how this happened but there seems to have been confusion between the 'Favorites Bar' folder and the old 'Links' folder in the Favorites directory, possibly occuring during the upgrade from Vista. For whatever reason there was no 'Favorites Bar' folder but all the items in the 'Links' folder were showing up on the Favories Bar. I removed the 'Links' folder from the directory and then on doing an 'Add to Favorites Bar' a new Favorites Bar folder was created into which I copied all the items from the old 'Links' folder, all now works correctly. Sorry if this sounds confusing, but to be really confusing prior to this fix I found that if I disabled 'Protected Mode' it also worked correctly. Given the random workings you are experienceing it may be worth checking to see which folder you have.

One more note on this issue. I found that my 'Favorite Bar' folder had vanished again and the 'Links' folder was back! Seems the reaons was due to Windows Live and 'Favorite Sync' and I think this is what must have ocurred initialy after the upgrade. So cleared out the Favorites folder on the SkyDrive and now we'll see :)

Blues-Riff, Deleting the Links folder in Favorites fixes the "Add To Favorites Bar" not working issue. Thank you!
