ICS: Network works, Internet doesn't
Hi. I have an XP desktop with a broadband (usb modem) internet connection and a Windows 7 laptop that connects to the internet trough Internet Connection Sharing using the desktop via LAN. The problem is that if the cable gets unplugged or the laptop goes in to suspend, upon reconnecting the network will work but the Internet will usually not. The setup worked before using the same Windows 7 installation on the laptop and a different XP installation on the desktop. The only workaround i found to work is restarting the desktop PC and reconnecting (restarting the laptop doesn't work). The settings to me appear to be correct: windows firewall is on on both computers microsoft network sharing client is enabled ICS is enabled on the desktop tried both static ip (192.168.0.1) and dynamic settings on the desktop LAN with no effect workgroup is the same for both computers, but the windows 7 laptop has the homegroup disabled the broadband connection on the desktop is enabled and the network cable is connected Please help. Thank you.zminin dot com

Most likely the issue lies with win 7 since you mention the home group is disable. Imo using ICS has it's cons as you need to ensurethe host (desktop)is on and running before the client (win 7) could access the net. Beside nowsday router are cheap, why not get a router, thepros of having a router is at any one time anyone or comps could access the net as well as you have hardware firewall to protect your internet connection. And if the router you're using come with wireless feature you could also go wireless

I know but until then i'm trying to get this to work. My desktop is on and connected 24/7. Plus i use a subscribed DSL phone line with an usb modem and their bundled router comes with all sort of conditions and contracts. So until I change my provider, any help would do.zminin dot com
