ICMP Ping on Vista
Hi Iam trying to use the 'PING' command to se if i have connection to the internet, i get responds from the default gateway, but don't get from out side on the internet, but if i use a XP then there is no problem. I have tryed to disable the firewall and stell don't get anything, and when i make a trace i can se the ICMP pack is comming out from Vista but don't se any responds. Do any body get the tool to work ? Regards Martin.

icmp commands work fine for me in both 5600 and 5728. if you can ping your default gateway, but can't ping outside of it then it's either your gateway device (router, firewall, etc) or your network settings and possibly your network adapter/driver. icmp does not discriminate based inside or outside network addressing.

Hi Ken If you read my first one, you well se that if i use a vertuel XP machine on the Vista machine then it works fine, so its not the driver/firewall/router. To Kurto I don't have any news from Microsoft yet but my TAM well get back to me when there is, i well keep you posted :-) /Martin

i don't have any experience with VM software, but it makes sense to me that if your in xp then you are using an xp network driver ... if your not using xp drivers in the virtual environment then it's not really xp your running is it? i would still have to point to network drivers. perhaps a bad driver is corrupting packets and making them unroutable? unlikely but possible. i really don't feel this is a vista issue because your local pings are working. if icmp was broken you wouldn't be able to ping anything on your local network. your problemdeals withrouting packets, and i honestly think you should be looking at your network adapter. would you at least humor me and try a different nic if you haven't already? not trying to give you a hard time, just trying to help

Hi Ken OK I well get back to you when its done with a different NIC. /Martin.

Just to follow up, I am experiencing the same problem, and am not using VMware. I have quite a few machines experiencing the same problem. I'll verify the NIC cards, though, since it's possible that all the ones that are failing are running the same NIC manufacturer and model.

If you are using IPV4, Try pinging the website by adding the -4 between the ping command & the site name. Example: C:\Documents and Settings\User>Ping -4 Google.com This is a workaround i guess, let me know if any other solution if you guys get it...
