Have you tried to restore your computer? Also have you tried to launch a gadget , it should also launch the sidebar.Hope this helps!

The sidebar is no longer interactive, so when you run it, nothing will appear to happen (but you will see it running in Task Manager --> Processes). If you right-click your desktop, select gadgets, and add a gadget, sidebar will fireup and run your gadgets for you.So no, you didn't break anything - totally expected behavior. :)Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

i did break it. i run it, it appears in task manager (process tab) for a second and then closes itselftried to get into it via gadgets on desktop and through the control panel and the same thing happens - it appears for a second in task manager and then dissapears. no errors, just doesnt open.

So if you add a gadget to your desktop, does the sidebar start and stay running? Or does the gadget not pin to your desktop?Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

Just move the slider on UAC up 1 notch from off, reboot, and gadgets will work again.

UAC is turned off. still too intrusive

ok, turned UAC back on and now it works? does this mean that if i turn it off again that sidebar will no longer work? is that by design or a bug?either way, i cant run this with UAC turned on so guess i will have to lose the sidebar. also means i wont be moving to win 7. i like the sidebar in vista and hate UAC.guess i have no option but to stick with vista then

I think it is a bug. I have reported it, as Im sure others have.

i've been reading around and am thinking now it might not be a bug. the gadgets run in protected mode only or something like that.i just need to figure out now, how to make something run with uac virtualization turned on. so far the option is greyed out for this program :(
