I've downloaded free security by avira.com, but now in the task bar is a red shield with silver outline and a white cross in the middle saying that my protection is out of date. Could someone tell me why please, and is this software safe to use? Thanks.

Avira Antivirus is an excellent program. I use it myself on all my Windows machines. That said, there is no way for us to know why your Avira isn't working. Perhaps your computer was already infected.
