Hyper Terminal
Has anyone been able to find an acceptable alternative to hyperterminal since it appears to be gone in vista?

Hello, You can still get Hyperterm free from Hilgraeve directly and it runs on Vista. http://www.hilgraeve.com/htpe/download.html Thanks,

Problem 1 being that it's a "personal edition", and there's maybe 3 people who are configuring Cisco routers that technically qualify for that. Problem #2 is that it won't install on Vista. Or at least Vista Ultimate. Even when running the 6-year-old install build (Wise? Who the hell uses Wise anymore?) with administrator privs, it craps out saying that c:\windows\system32\msvcrt.dll could not be opened and the install aborts. I find it interesting that Microsoft released the business editions of Vista earlier than the consumer editions, especially considering that the vast majority of tools an IT professional needs during their day either aren't included with Vista or don't run on it.

Umm...installs fine on Vista Ultimate, Home Premium and Business editions. Works great on all editions. I configured my Cisco switches, Isilon Storage systems, Extreme Switches and an older 3Com switch with it and had no problems. Yes, it does suck that they stopped use of that and want you to use Telnet, which is more of a PITA than anything since most routers and switches have Telnet access disabled by default, which is a good thing! I think the only thing that I found that won't run on Vista that I need as an IT tool is User Manager for user account control. It's the easiest tool to create and modify user accounts on a domain. Other than that, I wish Vista had an Admin Pak, but you can install the 2003 version and register some DLL's and you're good to go.So in the long run, maybe if you download the latest version you'd find that the personal edition works just fine......

Hyper terminal runs fine on Home Premium but one problem that a client is having is that when we try to send a file in either zmodem or xmodem mode nothing happens. I mean the screen comes up with a dialogue box but it just sits there and never sends the file. I disabled the firewall and checked security settings but no resolution to this problem. I thought about setting up Virtual PC and run XP so they can submit the file but Home Premium will not run Virtual PC 2007. Any thoughts in regard to this problem?Tim

Todd, did you ever find a fix for installing Hyperterminal on Vista Ultimate? I get a similar error, "The file 'C:\Windows\system32/regsvr32.exe' could not be opened." Tried to temporarily change the permissions for this file, but couldn't. Odd, but the same program installed on my Vista Pro!Thanks, Walter

Rich, I unfortunatley can not use any software for this application. This client is connecting to PGBA a government healthcare intermediary payor - in other words they pay medicare and other government health claims. I am pretty much stuck with using what they mandate. I will have to contact them in regard to this problem but I was trying to see if there was any solution to the hyperterminal file transfer issue on Vista Home Premium. I may try the Secure CRT just for the hell of it and see if it works. If so I will let you know. Thanks for the post and if you think of anything I would appreciate your reply. Thanks again, Tim

It installed fine on my Vista Ultimate. No disrespect but when installing the package did you remember to right click and run the install as administrator? I've made that mistake many times so its just a thought. LN

I also help process government claims, have you had any break throughs on the hyper terminal replacement? Or did you try the Secure CRT and did it work? Would love the help... Thanks Twila
