Hyper-V not installing on Windows 8.1

Hi

I can't activate the Hyper-V feature of Windows 8.1.  Whenever I enable the feature all goes well, I reboot when prompted.  But after the reboot Hyper-V is not installed - it's shown as not installed in "Turn Windows feature on and off".

The Windows Setup log has an information event (ID 11) "Update Microsoft-Hyper-V of package Microsoft-Hyper-V-ClientEdition-Package failed to be turned on. Status: 0x800f0922."

I tried DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, but that made difference.

I also tried activating the feature through DISM, but no joy.

Finally, I tried changing my SSD to a spare I had, and doing a fresh Windows 8.1 install on the new SSD, but Hyper-V still doesn't install.

I have a i7 CPU, and virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.

Did you also enable Data Execution Prevention in the BIOS? (and cold boot)

And, does your processor support SLAT?

Download this app: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/cc835722

run from an administrator command prompt:  "coreinfo -v"

What are your results?

You should see something like this if you're configured properly

D:\Downloads\Coreinfo>coreinfo -v

I ran wmic OS Get DataExecutionPrevention_Available which returned TRUE,

As I understand it, all i7 processors support SLAT.

Doesn't look like you added the "-v" after coreinfo.  That's the regular output of command alone.

One thing that is missing is EPT.  Your i7 does support it, but your MB or BIOS may not, which could be the issue.

Can you run again, but add the -v switch after coreinfo?

Sorry, you're quite right I had missed the switch.

Hi Karen No, I still have the issue. Hyper-V still fails to install with the same error in the Setup event log. Initially I thought it was a file corruption, but doing a clean Windows install on a new SSD didn't resolve the issue. Suggestions here that it's a BIOS issue, but from what I can see that looks ok as well. My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 Intel Z9, with an Intel Core i7-4790K CPU. Thanks, Roy

Search the Hyper-V forums for your Gigabyte motherboard and you will find it mentioned frequently.  And most folks with the same problem. (for multiple years)

Ultimately, your issue is a Gigabyte issue and you need to take it up with them.

Hi Roy,

Check with Gigabyte support for BIOS updates and post back if you're ultimately able to get Hyper-V to work or not and I will update my list.
