How to understand Windows 8.1

I've worked in IT all my working life but am really struggling with Widows 8. I had no choice but to use it as my previous computer died and my new one came with Win8.

After a while, struggling even to find an All programs button, I saw that there was a free download for Win 8.1. Fair enough, so I clicked to download it. The download started but there was no progress message so I clicked again. This time, the download seemed to kick in but, after a couple of hours (yes hours), it got stuck on 82% complete. What was going on at 82% remains a mystery.

So, I went out for the evening and left the computer on. When I got back, the install had magically finished.

I then had a go at downloading a game. There is a tile thingy called "Store". Being English, I assumed that store meant storage area but it turned out to be some kind of online shop. So I downloaded a free game and saw a message (in the "Store") that the game had been successfully downloaded. But where is it? When I go into the mysterious "Store", it's not there. I've clicked on everywhere else and can't find it either.

Having used every version of Windows since Windows 3, is there a simple description somewhere of the Win 8 GUI? I'm happy to learn but don't understand why Microsoft have made such a big change without adequate Help.

Windows 8 is a real struggle.

Just to add that, when I click on games, I get a message to "score my bragging rights". What does that mean? What is a bragging right?

If clicking on "games" doesn't display ones installed games, what is it I should have clicked on?

The answer turned out to be Windows 8.1. My new computer came with Windows 8 and I made the mistake of trying to set everything up before upgrading to 8.1 - which for some reason didn't come down automatically as a Windows Update. The whole experience was really painful and, it has to be said, Windows 8 was a dog (almost unusable).

Windows 8.1 on the other hand is really neat and the whole GUI now makes complete sense.

Anyone out there about to migrate to Windows 8 - make sure you've got 8.1 installed before doing anything else.
