How to troubleshoot RAS in Vista Ultimate?
Hi,I configured RAS in my Vista Ultimate. I'm in Admin group.I need to trace the communication between my computer and the modem to know what commands are going back and froth.I found in the below link that the DEVICE.LOG file will keep track of all this information in Windows NT.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/102782I added the registry entry as mentioned in the above link in my vista machine and restarted the RAS service. But that didn't create the Device.log file under System32\RAS.And as they mentioned in step e I couldn't found phonebook service in the services list. Is this service specific to Windows NT?Can any one please help on how to enable DEVICE.LOG file in Vista? And do I need todo any extra configuration other than what we do in XP TO Configure RAS? My goal is to establish a RAS connection to someexternal device through modem and after the idledisconnecttimeout the device should callback the workstation. I configured the incoming connections also. The device is calling back the workstation but I'm seeing the Incoming Connections status as No clients Connected. I need to resolve this. To do so I need to know the commands going back and forth. Please help me. It is blocking my progress.I would appreciate if microsoft can release a KB article on how to troubleshoot RAS in Vista. Thanks,Chinni

Hi Chinni, That KB article only applies to Windows NT systems. In Windows Vista, there is not Device Log available. To troubleshoot RAS issues, we may enable Network Tracing Log. RAS Logs=======Note: The logs need to be collected before you start the connection. Execute the following from elevated command prompt on both computer(the one works and the one fails). 1. Run "netsh ras set tr * en" (without quotes). This enables logging.2. Establish the connection. 3. After any issues occurs, run "netsh ras set tr * di" (without quotes). This disables logging. This will generate log files in the %windir%\tracing directory.Arthur Xie - MSFT
