How to troubleshoot Miracast pairing/connecting?

Using Windows 8.1. I'm having trouble getting Miracast to pair properly with a TV. Using certain modes on the TV, sometimes I manage to add it as a device, for a few seconds anyway, but establishing an actual connection in the Project menu never works.

Is there a way to enable logging to see what's going on in the pairing/adding process, and when trying to connect for projection?

i want to check whether your original OS is Windows 8 or older

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/project-wireless-screen-miracast

installed the latest drivers for your PC and the latest firmware for your wireless display or Miracast adapter

I don't see anything that looks relevant in the Event Viewer under "Windows Logs". Maybe there's something under "Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft", but I don't see anything on a quick look. It could be that I just don't know what I'm looking for, but I think it's also possible that relevant logging needs to be enabled explicitly.

britishdhez: What do you mean "original OS"? This is Windows 8.1 that was installed over 8.0 ("upgrade"). The drivers and firmware are the latest.

Hi,

How did you operate? Have you add it successfully?

If yes, remove it completely, and then follow this guide to get it:

Windows 8.1 on your big screen with Miracast

http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2013/11/12/windows-8-1-on-your-big-screen-with-miracast/

Note: Wireless display is available on most new Windows 8.1 PCs, but some PC manufacturers might choose not to include it on some new and upgraded PCs. Specifically, your PC needs WDDM 1.3 display and NDIS 6.4 Wi-Fi drivers, enabled by the IHV and OEM for Miracast. If you dont see Add a wireless display when you tap the Devices charm and tap Project, try going to Windows Update and downloading all available updates (including optional drivers). If you still dont see it, check for additional updates on your PC manufacturers support site, or contact them to ask how you can get this feature on your PC.

Hey Karen,

"Add a wireless display" is there. I can sometimes add the TV (as a device), but connecting to it as a display never works.

I checked what happens with someone else's computer where it can connect successfully. I found out that when it works, Windows prompts for a PIN which the TV shows. In my case there's no PIN prompt on Windows, nor a PIN shown on the TV. Sometimes the TV is added with no PIN prompt, sometimes even the adding fails.

The hardware and drivers are all Intel, and are Miracast compatible.

By the way, only NDIS 6.3 is required as far as I know, not 6.4. 6.3 added some network virtualization capabilities. 6.3 is the version on the computer where I tested Miracast to connected successfully, and it is also the version on my WiFi card.

Can you advise how to enable Miracast-related logging, or suggest another technique to analyze the problem?

Hi,

You need to be prompt a PIN code to pair your computer with TV.

If you see your TV under Play To devices, then that means you can push DLNA content (File > Right Click > Play To) to that TV. For Miracast mirroring, TV should be listed under wireless displays.

Please ran windows update and checked your intel drivers. Tried again after windows update and drivers update finished.

After input the PIN code to pair successfully, it establishes the connection.

In addition, trun off your firewall and antivirus for test.

Thanks.

The "normal" pairing procedure never worked for me, there was never a PIN prompt, so I was looking for a way to troubleshoot, look at logs, trace the handshaking, etc. I suspect this is a networking stack related issue because of related junk in Device Manager and some other symptoms due to the upgrade/install from Windows 8.0 to 8.1.

So I've given up, this is not something I'm going to reinstall Windows for.

If anyone has more info or suggestions, do share.

check your HW details at your PC manufactured, some of HW no longer can use miracast after upgrade to Windows 8.1, check also document related miracast in your PC manufactured forum. You can check with your PC manufactured site or intel regarding this feature or for deep technical TS

You can try use Windows 8 to check
