How to stop having to enter password twice?
I have Widows 7 Home Premium - upgraded from Vista Home Premium. I have three user accounts set up. When I try to log into my account after waking up the pc by touching the keyboard, I have to enter my password twice: The first time, it shows the spinning dial like it's going to log me in, but then it puts up the login screen again. The second time I enter my password, I am logged into my account. As long as the pc has not been asleep prior to login, I only have to enter the password once. I did not have this problem with Vista. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, mrpb

Hi, Does the issue occur on each user account? As Daft is mentioned, you can perform a Clean Boot for a test. Meanwhile, please also create a new user account and revert back from Sleep Mode for a test. Does the issue persist? Thanks, Novak

Hello. I finally got time to troubleshoot this on the weekend. Thanks for your help. I know that the issue occurs with other users. The problem is that it seems to occur randomly. At least, I think it's random. It may be related to how long the pc stays asleep. It seems to only occur after several hours or overnight. I have created another account and set the power profile so the PC goes to sleep after 1 minute (used to be 1 hour). Since then, I have not been able to duplicate the issue either with my account or the new account. So far, if I wait a few minutes or a couple of hours after it goes to sleep, the password works the first try. I think I need to figure out how to repeat the problem before I experiment with Clean boot. I'll post again when I have more information. Thanks again,Phil

Hello again. I did the clean boot procedure as suggested above. The problem did not go away. I have determined that the PC must be in sleep mode for at least 4 hours for the problem to occur: After sleeping for at least 4 hours, the PC always requires two attempts to log in - whether the account has a password or not. What should I try next? Thanks in advance, Phil

Does anyone have a suggestion on this, or should I post to a different Microsoft forum?

Have you considered that it maybe a problem with the actual Hiberfil.sys file itself? Windows 7 – Delete Hibernation File (hiberfil.sys)http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-delete-hibernation-file-hiberfil-sys/ After you have deleted the file via the Powercfg command, reboot, and turn Hibernation back on to recreate the file. Use the appropriate command to suit the situation. powercfg –h offpowercfg –h on I don't use Hibernation but I believe there is also a checkbox in Disk Cleanup to remove the Hibernation File. Other things that you could try include running ChkDsk. Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems. Running the System File Checker. Sorry, after a week with no reply, I went to Tek-Tips.com and they helped me find the solution. I'm posting it here in case other have the same problem. This was the fix: Power Options: Require Password when Waking from Sleep was requiring it on top of the usual log in. All I had to do was uncheck that option. Control Panel: Power Options / [System and Security->Power Options] depending on your CP layout. On the left Pane, "Require a Password on Wake Up" http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1599573&page=1

I'm having the same or very similar problem. Running Windows 7 Ultimate with all available updates as of the date of this post. OS is configured to suspend to RAM automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity. When I'm logged in to my user account, and it suspends to RAM, I am prompted to enter my password twice to log back in. To me, this is clearly a bug. Whether it is programmed to run a password-protected screen saver or not, and whether I was already logged in or not, the OS should be smart enough to only prompt a user for authentication once. Failure to do so is an error in design. Could someone please make sure the Windows programmers are aware of this, so that it can be fixed? Thank you.
