Hi,It’s better to remove the virus first before you do anything else. Virus can infect any system files. If you can use the external enclosure and scan using the security software installed on the computer, you can try that.“How do I remove a computer virus?” http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/How-do-I-remove-a-computer-virusDianaMicrosoft Answers Support EngineerVisit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think. If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Hi,Try running a chkdsk from recovery console. Note: /r Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. When you run the checkdisk, there are chances of losing data so you can take a backup before running checkdisk.a. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.Note: Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so. b. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.Note: If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.c. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.d. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following then press Enter:Chkdsk drive /re. Allow this to run undisturbed until completed (45 min or so)f.
