How to move programs to an external hard drive without removing them.
I am trying to free some memory space on my hard drive and purchased an external hard drive. I had no trouble moving things from MyDocuments, but I would like to move some actual programs there that I use only rarely but still want. When I go to the Control panel and select Change/REmove programs, it seems that it never gives me an option to actually change, just remove. Is there a way I can move some actual programs over to the external hard drive. For example, the program Powerpoint, I never use it, but I might someday. Thanks for your help. itypeit1 person needs an answerI do too

You cannot simply ’move’ them elsewhere. However, what you can do is uninstall them and reinstall them elsewhere (internal disk is recommended, not external): 1. Uninstall the programs you want to move, make sure you have made copies/notes of any data connected to these programs, product codes, preferences and the like. 2. Create a folder on the drive you want to install programs, call it, unimaginatively, D:\Program Files. Open Run window (Windows key+R), type regedit, press Enter and in the left pane navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. In the right pane, right-click ProgramFilesDir and Modify it to the drive/folder of your choice, e.g. D:\Program Files which will, in future, put all new programs on the D drive.
