How to monitor Offlline Files
I could not yet find a way to monitor the Offline File Sync in Windows 7. I'd like to monitor if a file was already synched, as I could in prev. versions. Is it because of the block-level-synch that I cannot longer monitor the synch on a file basis? Furthermore I found some weired behaviour related to multiple persons editing a single file. Sometimes it can combine the changes, sometimes not. Any tools, ressources, hints? Thorsten

Hi Thorsten, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. You can check the Sync Center for the sync results and conflicts. If you want to monitor one file, based on my known, there’s no program in Windows focused on monitoring the offline file. If you’re a developer, the Offline Files API allows applications to control and monitor the behavior of Offline Files programmatically. Refer to: Offline Files . In addition, some third party tools could help you, here’s a similar discussion: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/offline-files-dont-all-synchronize-t647725.html, also Bing for some proper tools. Thanks Miya for the reply. I may quote from the link you mentioned above: "I've seen too much heartache with offline files." (http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/offline-files-dont-all-synchronize-t647725.html) I am looking for tools/techniques to monitor the built-in Offline Files-technology. A 3rd-party software is not an option. Writing my own tool either, although I am thankful for the hint regarding to the API. If anyone knows something else, I am still curious to read it. Thanks Thorsten

Hi Thorsten, You can enalbe the Event Logging for the Offline files, check this for the details: How to enable Event Logging for Offline files(Client Side Caching) , it's also applied for Windows 7. Since there's no built-in tools for monitoring the single offline file as I replied before, you can submit your feedback to our Product Feedback Team. Regarding the wierd issues around multiple people accessing one file, I've found a few things. There's a patch in SP 1 that resolves an issue with D53245D3.TMP type files being created and the original files being actually removed from network drives, as a result of slow network detection forcing things into offline mode: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2434932 Check the sync centre regularly on a few machines to ensure things aren't going into offline mode unexpectedly due to Slow link detection, this will often cause problems with multiple people accessing one file. If you're using Group Policy and things are being cached unexpectedly, check and perhaps tweak the "Configure Slow Link Mode" object under Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Network\Offline Files\. Also, it might be worth looking at the Transparent caching option in the same area, as this should check back with the server to confirm file version. We have struggled with Offline Files on what should be a fast network here, I think there's a fair ammount of tweaking required to get this working smoothly if you have slow networks/older file servers (2003 here)
