How to map onedrive.live.com on Windows 8.1?

I want to be able to access onedrive.live.com files from Windows Explorer.  I don't like using app.  I like to be able to do that like what I can with Windows 7 Windows Explorer.  Please advise!

I have started but couldn't pass specifying the location of the website.

OneDrive is a cloud based file hosting service that allows you to  upload, browse, share, sync and save files to a online storage place. It was developed by Microsoft in 2007 and earlier known as SkyDrive. You can access OneDrive in Web browsers on devices like Microsoft windows, iOS and Android. You can store 7 GB for free and if you require more space you have to purchase it.

Mapping Network Drive is syncing your online OneDrive Account with your PC. When you open File Explorer on your PC you do not find OneDrive in navigation panel. Cause is you have not mapped your network drive on your PC. You need to map a hard drive of your PC with OneDrive account. After mapping is finished you could see the drive name is changed to OneDrive and the option is present in file explorer. It means you can open you online OneDrive on your PC and files and folders and settings in your account automatically sync with Windows 8.1 PC. Mapping OneDrive on Windows 8.1 PC avails you extra space to share files and folders.

For Mapping OneDrive on your PC you need to log in with a Microsoft account in your PC. You do dont need to install OneDrive in your PC because it comes pre-installed in Windows 8.1.and you could see OneDrive application in your Start Screen.

Map OneDrive in This PC on Windows 8.1

1. Open OneDrive.com in your web browser.

2. Log in with your Microsoft Account.

3. Click on Files appears at your left panel.

4. Copy unique number cid= Number from url in address bar.

5. Open This PC and click on Computer tab.

6. It will open ribbon and now click on Map network drive.

7. Choose a Drive where you need to sync your onedrive.

8. In Folder type  https://d.docs.live.net/cid number. As i told you you will get cid number from address bar in Step 4.

9. Click on Finish.

10. It will start to Attempting to connect and  display you a message.

11. After few seconds Windows Security will ask you to enter your Microsoft account Username and Password.

12. Enter them and press OK

13. It will take few minutes for mapping.

All finished. your OneDrive is now mapped with your PC. Open This PC and you will see OneDrive. You can access all your files uploaded at OneDrive in your PC.

Hi,

Healee

You can easily map one drive to your windows 8 .1 PC no need to download app more just follow all steps listed below to access one drive  directly from the PC as a drive

Step 1: Open File Explorer Click on Computer Tab and click on Map network drive

Step 2: Now select the drive letter ex: S, P as you wish to have assigned to mapping one drive. Now check the reconnect sign in box and copy paste the address into the folder field

Step3: Sign in to one drive account at onedrive.live.com  now tap on files left side and copy your unique CID number from address bar. For every account CID number is always unique.

Step4: Paste your CID number at the end on address in the folder filed.  From Step 2 when you assign drive for map

Step5: Process for map drive in Windows will start it takes few minutes

Step6: After that login window will be pop up you need to enter your one drive login information and remember your login credential for future use

Step7 : Windows now finish to mapped drive now you can see the mapped drive to network location in file explorer you can also rename it

I have noticed that I can only get the CID number if I get into one of the folders.

While I can put files in the root directory, no CID number would show up there.

I am not quite sure what I am supposed to enter in the window of Map Network Drive.

I notice that the folder field would not take a folder of a local drive as what I have indicated there now.  It seems that it would only take a drive in the networked notation though the drive is a local drive.

I am in a public library and I don't want to turn on the network discovery. Does it have to access the drive in this manner?  Does it mean I won't be able to access the drive in future when I am on a public network.

By the way, could you please check the syntax of the folder path for me?  Is it the way to enter the CID? I can't go past this step.

Hi healee,

The folder name is incorrect.

It should be "https://d.docs.live.net/CID number".

Here is a link for reference of the whole process.

Hi healee,

I am glad to be of help to you.

For the credential issue, please navigate to the following path:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Credential Manager

Add a "Generic Credential" here. The "network address " should be "d.docs.live.net".

I don't quite follow what you said.

Where and how to add the generic credential?

Below is the screen shot of an existing credential.

Thanks, but the generic credential you suggest is already there while the logon problem happens.

Also, I have found that the mapped drive for onedrive.com no longer works when I am on a public network such as a public library.  I guess it must be because the network discovery is turned off.  Is there a way to go round it.

Hi healee,

One case on thread, it is recommended to open another case for the other issues considering the previous issue has been resolved.
It will very clear as a preference for the person who will come across the similar issue in the future. Thanks for understanding and cooperation.

Best regards

Could you see above that your MeipoXu asked me to raise another thread for the "new" problems?

The new problems are the mapped drive wouldn't remember logon password for one, and such mapping won't work on public network for another.  She reckoned these were separate issues.

Please clarify and confirm!

Since I am not allowed separate threads as MeipoXu suggested for new but relevant issues, I have to unmark anything in this thread as answer to the problem in order to draw more attention from whoever cares to help.

Hi healee,

The previous issue is how to map the OneDrive and we have mapped the OneDrive succussfully.

The present issue is that the password of the OneDrive won`t be remembered. One case one issue. So I suggest you open a new case.
We should re-clarify the new issue and change the topic(important). It will be very clear to understand the issue for the person who will come across the similar issue in the future.

Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

I did as you suggested.  Please ask him why.

However, the following person deleted my the other two threads.

Another user, Roger Lu, has replied to a thread you have subscribed to in the Windows 8.1 General Forum. Thread Title Mapped networked drive for https://onedrive.live.com/ won't remember password to log on automatically. Started by: healee Reply:

Hi,

How did you do to Map the OneDrive location? As far as I know, to remember OneDrive password, you just need to check logon automatically at MS Account login screen.

Hi,

I noticed that you already post another similar thread, please don't post same thread twice.

For your problem, I'm a bit confused because Windows already has a built-in OneDrive for user. You can use it to sync and access your personal file. No need to map it to your Windows Explorer.
