I connect to the internet via a city-wide wi-fi network. The signal level is low indoors, so the special external adapter attached to the window glass (from inside) is used. Its connected via USB. But my problem isn't specific to this particular kind of adapter. So, now I have around 60% signal level (or -65 dBm). Good. But the adapter tries to connect on the fastest possible speed, that is, 56 mbps, and also it often raises/lowers the speed as the conditions change. This leads to packet loss and poor user experience. I know the way to solve the problem, which worked fine in XP. Of course, I didnt need 56 mbps only to use the internet. I had to limit the speed. I downloaded the driver for my adapter (http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Windows.html), and it had an utility called RaUI with it. This utility is used to choose a network, it stores profiles, etc. And I can set the desired speed. Also I can disable 11g and make it work with 11b. It worked excellent. But now I switch to Vista. The same adapter, but another computer. So, I installed the same driver, and now I see that I can not set the speed. Oops. The RaUI program now lacks those tabs. Probably, now I must do it via Vista means, but how? I watched into the device properties window, but it also lacks the speed attribute. Ok, maybe I can at least disable 11g? Please help me if anyone know. Is there any solution independent from the adapter model? Or, at least, any solution at all? What if it was my notebooks internal network adapter? If I owned the access point, I could limit the speed there. The point is, this is the providers network, so I cant tweak the access point. And the provider, for some strange reasons, set it to 56M, which isnt necessary, as the actual download speed in this network never was more than 100 kilobyte/s (usually less).
