If you want to replace hard disk, you have to reinstall Windows , All programs and data. It is recommended to take a backup of your system and then insert your new hard disk , then install Windows and programs and recover your backup.

Plus in the samsung they will give the magician software is that of any use?

The Samsung Magician software is simply for optimization of the OS and the SSD NOT FOR BACKUP. Norton Ghost might not be useful. As JWTalka stated, the SSD needs to be larger then the amount of "Used" space on your HDD. Using
ghost probably won't work as the geometry of a HDD and an SSD are different and so the placement of data will be wrong and your SSD won't boot.
Lifehacker has a guide though this is at your own risk. As always, make a full and complete backup of ALL YOUR DATA before proceeding so if things go wrong you can still back track to your original HDD with all your data. A fresh install is recommended
but you can try the instructions below.

Samsung's Data Migration software should work as it details going from HDD to SSD. I would suggest running a defrag first before running this.
A reinstall of Windows was recommended but not necessary if the Samsung Data Migration works as detailed. You might get a better response on Samsung Community QA, though, as this seems more detailed to their products/hardware and the capabilities of

Thanks for replying one more question will not reinstalling the os cause the ssd to under perform?
July 7th, 2013 5:29am
Under perform? No, it would probably be better optimized as a fresh new install as it would be less fragmented than your current setup and it would help to ensure you only put back what you need instead of taking the whole lot.

So I can use the migration toll and the os will be faster will the application even work faster like photoshop?
