How to find driver versions in Windows Update?
I have a huge problem with Windows Update in terms of information. Using an OEM machine (FYI, a Lenovo X201i 3249 CTO), which means many of the drivers are custom made, I frequently get new drivers in Windows Update for the hardware. A couple of days ago, I got a new driver via Windows Update with this information: Lenovo - Display - ThinkPad Display 1280x800 Download size: 19 KB You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. Update type: Optional Lenovo Display software update released in March, 2011 More information: http://winqual.microsoft.com/support/?driverid=20418071 Help and Support: http://support.microsoft.com/select/?target=hub Now, I cannot find this driver using the Lenovo update software and also not on their web site. Yet it seems it is specifically for the Lenovo screen. But this is all the information I get, so I cannot make an informed decision. I am having some problems related to the screen, so I would like to have an update driver. But even the links from Windows Update do not lead anywhere helpful. There simply is no way of figuring out what driver version this is. So how can I figure out if this is something I want to install? The whole point with labeling it "optional" should be to allow me to decide whether to install it. But based on what information? All I know is that it is a driver that seems to be for my screen, that the file is 19KB and that it was released in March. This is hardly enough to make any decision. At all. I frequently have this kind of problem with Windows Update. Computer illiterates are probably happy with this information, but those of us who know our way around computers (or, at least, I) find this very frustrating. So here's my question: is there any way of finding out what driver this is? That is, what version number it has or any other information that can help me decide if it is actually worth it to install on my system or if I should wait for another (or OEM-approved) update. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Get the driver from here: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=Lenovo%20-%20Display%20-%20ThinkPad%20Display%201280x800%20 The latest version is 4.36.0.0 André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" Want to install RSAT on Windows 7 Sp1? Thanks, Andre. I still feel there should be more information available in WU. Or at least a link to the update catalog for more info. Doesn't make sense that there is almost none.

I think most users don't care about it. That's why it is not shown."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" Want to install RSAT on Windows 7 Sp1? Check my HowTo: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=150221
