How to connect to a remote linux server over the internet by entering the serverer address as used to with XP's 'search for computers'?
I've been trying to find out how to find and log into our remote office server using Windows 7 explorer on a new machine I am setting up at home (the connection is private and firewalled at both ends). In XP I used to 'search for computers' in explorer and enter the address (servername.webaddress.com) and it would find the server straight away. The windows 7 machine must be able to see the server as running the same rsync script as I had on the XP machine from the command prompt seems to locate the server (but as yet doesn't backup correctly), but I've failed to find a way of directing file explorer to look for the address (the network searching I've found is automated and all I've been able to do so far is make various changes in the network and sharing centre). Can anyone show me how to search for my remote linux server using the server name and web address?

Hi, Are the Windows 7 machine and the Windows XP machine in the same subnet? Do you try to access the Linux Server on another Windows 7 machine? Here are some suggestions you can try: 1. Temporarily turn off firewall on Windows 7 machine. 2. Modify relevant settings on Windows 7 machine. a. Click Start and open Control Panel. b. Open "Network and Sharing Center" and click "Advanced sharing settings". c. Expand the current network profile (such as "Home or Work"), and then select the following options: "Turn on Network Discovery", "Turn on file and printer sharing", "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders", "Turn off password protected sharing" 3. Try to search the Linux server via IP address for a test. You can also refer to the suggestions from the link below: Cannot access Windows 7 shared folder from Linux box If issue still occurs, please transfer a large file and perform following steps to capture a log file. Collect the Netmon trace ========================= a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f b. Launch NetMon3.3. c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab … d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon. f. Try to download the large file. When it failed, go to step 7. g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test. Then please upload to SkyDrive (www.skydrive.live.com ) and share the link to me. Thanks, Novak
