How to connect to a VPN in Windows 7 x64
I am trying to connect to a VPN over the internet. I am using Windows 7's "Set up a vitrual private network (VPN) connection" wizzard. I enter the domain, the username, and the password, and when I try to connect, I get an error 800. I have disabled the Windows Firewall, and have no other firewalls or "internet protection" programs instaleld. I have checked my router settings and have it set to allow all types of VPN tunneling. When I disabled IPv6 and force it to use PPPT I get an error 807.Right now i'm looking into setting up a dual boot of XP so that I can VPN in using that, but i'd love to figure out VPN on Windows 7.Any help?

Hi, Thank you for posting. Regarding the error messages, I would like to share the following with you: Routing and Remote Access Error Codes Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Update the network adapter driver. 2. Since this computer is connecting to a router, please bypass the router and connect to the network directly and see if you can establish the connection. Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hello, Thanks for the fast response ! You are right ! I connected my laptop directly to internet, and it works !! Now, what can I do to make it work through my router ? Since my router is the calling router, it shouldn't have anything special to configure... Please explain what is going on ! Thanks.

Hello again, I am very confused... Since I connected the laptop directly, I tried every other kind of connections (Wired, wireless, wired and wireless, router and no router), and it works now, everytime, and I didn't reboot since yesterday ! Just fooled around with the network cables... I will reboot later and do the tests again... So confusing... AH computers...

I'm also having a similar problem, however we use a web interface for connection, to make is somewhat idiot proof. This also allows the clients to update whenever we need. It installs the app via Active X and sets up a Java Virtual Machine. This works just fine under XP, howeve rit's never worked under Vista. Unfortunately it's not working under Windows 7 and this would be a major problem with us deploying it in the infrastricture. The VPN is Aventail. I can't post anything beyond that specifically due to NDA. Under XP when I connect a system to the web page it asks for user/pass then installs the IE plug in (works on all versions) then connects. The install is a one time thing unless there is a client update. When I connect under Win7 it asks if I want to install, I click the top bar in IE for yes and nothing visible happens. There is a yellow (!) at the bottom left and then after a time it loads to teh pages, giving me web only VPN but not full access for connection via Remote Desktop and to the Exchange. I'm a DA on the site and full control so it's not an account restriction thing.

So...... Nothing on this?

I have tried both of these steps, and I am still unable to connect. I can do it fine from my laptop which is running Vista 32bit, but not a 64bit Windows 7 machine.

Unfortunately, No more errors !! It wasn't working, and since I tried directly connecting to internet, it works fine since then... It would be nice if configuration would do this more often :) So to conclude, I do not know what made it work again... It worked after I tried to plug my portable directly, with a wire, to the internet modem, and it works fine since then, even trough the router, wirelessly !

Hardwareguru - what firmware version are you running on your Aventail? What browser are you using? Your description fits a known issue in 10.0.2 when using IE8. According to SW, the tunnel client provisioning requires ActiveX or Java; if ActiveX is disabled, Java is used; if Java is not installed, the user should see an error. The issue is due to IE8 incorrectly reporting that Java is enabled even if it is not installed on the system, causing the provisioning failure. On XP, this causes the provisioning to fail at the Loading Agent stage; on Vista, failure occurs after the yellow information bar is displayed. While there is no workaround suggested, I have had some success by updating to J6U15 (http://www.java.com). An alternative method might be to enabled ActiveX.Hope this helps!-eaw

Does any one was able to fix this problem? I have three desktop computers with Windows 7 64bits and 2 laptops (1 with Windows 7 32bits and the other with 64bits). In all the computers the VPN connection to my office fail. Stops when displays "Validating User Id and Password" and stay forever there. Before I updated my laptop I was using Windows Vista 32bits and the VPN worked perfectly. Is critical for me to fix this and I can't find nothing to help me with this. Carlos A. Flores
