How to connect to Shared-WEP with Windows 8.1

Since I've upgraded my laptop to Windows 8 and now 8.1 I'm no longer able to connect to the several "Shared WEP" wireless networks that I need to connect to.  I am NOT an administrator to these networks so I'm unable to change the security type, so I am not interested in any responses from anybody telling me that I need to avoid using WEP.  The administrators refuse to change the setting, so I'm stuck trying to fix this problem myself.

Does anybody know of a work-around or a fix?  Is there anything I can install to get it to work?  The security type "Shared" is simply not an option when managing the networks from Windows 8.

This is really unfortunate because I was going to purchase a Microsoft Surface tablet....but if there's no way to get it to connect to the networks like I need it to, it would be a huge waste of money......just as it was to "upgrade" Windows.

Thanks in advance!

Shared WEP is insecure, and is not supported in Windows 8.  There's more information here.
