How to configure a non-certified USB drive as a fixed drive to use it in W2Go Creator Wizard?

Hi,

I need to create some Windows To Go bootable drives using some non-certified USB flash drives. Then, I want to enable Bitlocker on them to protect my OS and Data from modifications and alterations. I know the certified ones are factory configured as fixed drives. How it could be done by a helper software; this means we can manually make it W2Go Certified? I use USB disks from different vendors such as Patriot, Kingmax, ...

Without this process, I cannot create two required system/OS partitions on the USB disk, and Windows To Go wizard will not accept them.

Thanks

I had followed the same steps in that admin magazine article. No Response at all. The underlying problem is that the Microsoft Certified USB Drives for Windows To Go are factory-configured as fixed disks. This allows the W2G wizard or apps create two required partitions on the USB disk.

So I need a tool or set of tools to help me change my Removable drive to a Fixed one. This relates to flipping a hidden bit inside the USB drive firmware; but it just could happen to a limited set of USB drives as manu manufacturers do not allow this manipulation.

My USB drive is a Patriot RAGE type (32 GB). Also, there is a Kingmax 8GB I use during my tests.

Any idea directing me to solve my problem with non-microsoft-certified drives is welcome.

Create the second partition yourself. This has nothing to do with certified/or "set to fixed disk". Simply create a second partition with diskpart. Do you know how?

Hi Ronald,

I think I am sure almost you have not already created two partitions on a REMOVABLE type USB Flash drive using Diskpart, Disk Management or other similar tools. Windows natively just recognize the first primary partition on the REMOVABLE disk or if there is no primary partition, the first logical one is then recognized. Yo CANNOT create more than one partition on a REMOABLE disk under Windows systems. This is apparently shown by the Diskpart tool as an error message or Disk Management utility when you try to create second partition on this type of disk. The FIXED type disk has no limitation like that; the reason behind making the Microsoft-Certified disk as FIXED type by the manufacturing factory is exactly the above mentioned limit.

Thanks

Hi sisili.

I am afraid I remembered this incorrectly. I thought I did that with BL on uncertified drives already in the past. Will retry this afternoon.

Found the time, finally.

You are right. To circumvent this:
