How to change usernames without to mess up folder redirection
Hi, we are using folder redirection: \\server\share\%username% Now we have to change some of the usernames. After login, we find event id "502" from source "folder redirection" in the eventlog and the files and folders are not moved to the new location: Redirect options=0x80001009 The following error occurred: "Failed to copy files from "\\server\share\oldusername\desktop" to "\\server\share\newsusername\desktop". Error details: "This file is currently not available for use on this computer. The permission on the server is set to recommendations in the windows 7 ressource kit (page 563): CREATOR OWNER – Full Control (Apply to: Subfolders And Files Only) System – Full Control (Apply to: This Folder, Subfolders, And Files) Domain Admins – Full Control (Apply to: This Folder, Subfolders, And Files) (This option is required only if you want administrators to have full control.) <each group listed in policy> – Create Folder/Append Data (Apply to: This Folder Only) <each group listed in policy> – List Folder/Read Data (Apply to: This Folder Only) <each group listed in policy> – Read Attributes (Apply to: This Folder Only) <each group listed in policy> – Traverse Folder/Execute File (Apply to: This Folder Only) Is there a "best practice" when changing usernames and using folder redirection? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953529 I believe this KB applies even though it only says XP/Vista. We plan on changing our account names to be consistent with other domains in our forest. I recently changed my own name and ran in to this problem. Interestingly it does create the new folder on the server and copy all the data over. The problem is my client didn't update and I'm still looking at the old folder which is now empty. I don't like the solution. Having to completely delete the user profile on the machine seems excessive and will result in loss of data for anything that isn't redirected. We only redirect "My Documents" and "Desktop". I feel like there has to be another way accomplish this without loss of data.

I'll give it a try. This seems like it would be extremely difficult to do for the whole company.

Hi I search for solutions 4 days and nothing more closely to solve this issue. In Windows XP I never care about this thing, and now Windows 7 which is newer operating system make me such as difficulties. I make several test how this process go on Windows XP and everything work fine, I need 3 user log off/on after rename the user name and system everything is doing self. But in Windows 7 (I never do this in Windows Vista) this issue is appearing. I also try thinks in this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977229 because it looks to me that some of scenario aspects are like in my case but nothing again. Dear Microsoft please helps to your clients and solves these problem. In this moment I have 2 options like a solutions, which I test in test infrastructure with small count of data in user My Documents. Solution 1 User work on Windows 7 and his My Documents are redirected on Windows Server 2008 R2 file server. I need to rename user name on that user. I will do these steps: 1. Make user rename on Active Directory. 2. Go to user Windows 7 PC log on with some admin user and delete user profile. You must delete all user profiles on all PCs the user log on before, with old user name. Note! Before deleting user profile you should backup all things (user desktop, favorites, mail cashed contacts) you need to restore on new user profile 3. Log on user again and new user profile well be create. 4. Open >> Start > Control Panel > Sync Center > View Sync Partnerships > Offline Files > %Root redirected folder% > %old user name% folder > My Documents >> . Now you should copy all things user need from this location to user My Documents which is new location of redirected My Documents. After that you should make full successive Sync All to transfer correctly all data from user locale My Documents to file server redirected folder. This should be very long process if user has a lot of data or if you use some file archiving system like Symantec Vault in your organization. If you use file archiving system like Symantec Vault in your organization, all already archived data will be unachieved and will be copy to My Documents in real memory. 5. With step 4 all procedure is finished and if you are sure that user can work normally (wait several days), delete all data from %Root redirected folder%\%old user name% folder\ Solution 2: User work on Windows 7 and his My Documents are redirected on Windows Server 2008 R2 file server. I need to rename user name on that user. I will do these steps: 1. Log on user on some Windows XP PC. 2. Make full synchronization of redirected My Documents on Windows XP PC. This should be very long process if user has a lot of data or if you use some file archiving system like Symantec Vault in your organization. 3. Log off user by that Windows XP PC. 3. Make user name rename on Active Directory. 4. Log on user with new user name on Windows XP PC. 5. Make 3 times gpupdate /force and log off , and everything will be OK. Now all data are transferred from old location to new location of redirected My Documents. This should be very long process if user has a lot of data or if you use some file archiving system like Symantec Vault in your organization. 6. Go to user Windows 7 PC log on with some admin user and delete user profile. You must delete all user profiles on all PCs the user log on before with old user name. Note! Before deleting user profile you should backup all things (user desktop, favorites, mail cashed contacts) you need to restore on new user profile 7. Log on user again and new user profile well be create and everything should be OK.
