How to block internet access for one local profile on a non domain Windows 7 Ultimate Workstation
Hi, I have a standalone shared Windows 7 workstation. Two users on it have a incredible talent for downloading viruses. I wish to disable the internet access of the local account they use, while leaving others untouched. Can anyone advise me of how this is done? Please note I do not want to tweak their internet access, I want to end it completely. Thanks

Tweak internet explorer: Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel. Go to the Connections tab and click LAN settings. Uncheck "Automatically detect settings" and then check "Use proxy server" and put settings in for a proxy server that doesn't exist. This will time out the Web browser each time a user tries to pull up an Internet site. Unfortunately, a savvy user could go into the settings and fix this. OR : Use WINDOWS STEADY SATE to control users access, etc.. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx Hope this helps :)

Windows Steady State is not compatible for Windows 7. If the user accounts for other users are standard accounts, you may try Parental Controls. Explore the features Parental controls Set up Parental ControlsArthur Xie - MSFT

To get Windows Steady State to work on windows 7, do the following: Right click the installation and go to properties Choose Compatibility mode on the tab And choose "run this program in compatibility mode for: previous version of windows Apply and install the program again. Tested and working.

Thanks to all that replied. However, I resolved it myself in the end by creating a new user profile and then choosing 'deny' on ntfs permissions for read and exectue on the executables for Mozilla and IE.

This does not end the internet for your users. And would only take me a few seconds to circumvent. If you are happy with it, than so be it, otherwise I would want another option to make this viable. How would you circumvent this if all the other user accounts are standard, and ntfs permissions are set to deny? Regards, QH

Open a command prompt, type net user administrator Then change the permissions or install another browser. You should probably disable TCP/IP connections. (this is just my opinion, correct me if i am wrong please.)
