How to backup a drive encrypted with BitLocker preserving the encryption?
You can use the BitLocker To Go for this external drive. Refer to: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rockyh/archive/2009/03/01/bitlocker-to-go.aspx Regards, MiyaMiya Yao TechNet Community Support

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate. My drive C is encrypted using BitLocker. I'm now trying to set up backups of my user data (Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Videos) using an external hard drive. I am also trying to set it up using a built-in Windows "Backup and Restore" utility. The question I have is how do I protect my data? Can I still use BitLocker on an external drive? If yes, then how? PS. My main concern is that if I encrypt the external drive with a BitLocker, will I be able to restore backups if my computer fails (on a new Windows installation with a possibly new hardware)?

To my knowledge, restoreing a drive will not restore with bitlocker intact, I have always had to to re-encrypt once restore was complete. Windows has always flagged saying I was restoreing a bitlocked drive and it would not be encrypted. Bitlocker to go has not been any different. I dont have an on-board TPM, So I use a USB key, is there away to auto with USB key? To encrypt while retore is in progress? And to use the same Key?

I'm using it with a USB key too. Well, as long as my data is restored back I can re-encrypt it again.... what would be much worse is if something was missing to restore my data back from the backup encrypted with BitLocker. I didn't try it though...
