Because thats how NTBackup was designed, before the advent of CD's If you want to backup to cd, buy a specific backup app, eg Acronis TI

Thanks for an obvious answer. Apparently ASR has never been updated to the real world where floppy drives are seldom used. No more responses are required. Thanks for your effort.
