Generally, it's recommend to make backup directly to external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs. To restore your backup file, you can refer to the following link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Restore-files-from-a-backup As your confusions, if you want to move the oldest backup to external hard disk, you'd better copy all file, they must be complete. If your backup files are corrupted, you can refer to the following thread to re-create the MediaID.bin file when your meet that trouble. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7repair/thread/90804bcd-4ae3-4f96-a756-622fccd39d76 In my opinion, I recommend you to change the backup setting, so that the backup location is changed to external hard disks. I hope this can help you.John

The most common way how to start the Windows 7 backup function is to click the Start button and write a ‘backup ’ word. The Backup and Restore shortcut will appear. Click it and you will see the Backup and Restore too Another way how to run the Windows 7 backup directly is click to the flag icon in system tray. The message panel of new Action Center will appear – with Set up backup link. We can also run the Backup and Restore tool directly from the Control Panel or from the Action Center Maintenance section . Action Center in Windows 7 So as soon as you will click the Set up backup button or link (see above) you will see the progress bar and then the Set up backup window will appear. Select the backup destination. You can use the DVD, USB flash disk, USB external drive or the network location. Remember, that you have to click the Refresh button whenever you connect another USB device. Set up backup windows in Windows 7 The next step will you prompt with ‘What do you want to backup? ’ question. The default backup action will cause the Windows 7 will backup all your data in Libraries (Windows 7’s new specialty), Desktop and Windows folder. I recommend to choose the ‘Let me choose option ’ and manually select the folders or Libraries you wish to backup. Select folders and libraries to backup In the next step, click the Save settings and run backup button. The backup process will start. If Windows 7 will need an another empty media you will be prompted with the corresponding dialog.

I am not asking, how to do a backup. I would like to know, how to archive(!) Backup Sets created by Windows Backup so I can restore from them. Archiving backup files ist the(!) standard backup pattern used with any backup utility. I want to move backup files to an external to disk to store them in a different physical location. I solved a part of my problem: "Select another backup to restore files from" does not find Backup Sets, when browsing to the Backup Sets folder. I you only browse to the drive letter, it does find the Backup Set. This looks like a bug to me. I can select the files to restore. But on restoring Windows complains about the missing MediaID. After copying the MediaID Windows cannot find the ZIP file containing the backed up files. The error message shows that it looks in a wrong path.

In my opinion, it's better to make backup to the external discs directly. If your Mediaid.bin file is corrupted or lost while restoring files, you can use the following instructions for rebuilding it: 1.Unzip the sdutil.zip file and rename it from sdutil.ex_ to sdutil.exe2.Copy the sdutil.exe to the root of the driver which contains the backup files3.Open the folder Catalogs located bellow the folder BackupSet “aaaammdd” “xxxxxx”4.Copy the file GlobalCatalog.wbcat to the root of this HD5.Go to Start -> Execute and type CMD.exe6.At this “DOS” window type: sdutil mediaid GlobalCatalog.wbcat [HD letter (as an example D:\)]6(2) At this “DOS” window type the HDD letter of your backup disk (as an example F:\). This will change the following command to execute directly on the backup drive rather than addressing that drive with a command on C:\ type sdutil mediaid GlobalCatalog.wbcat [HD letter (as an example F:\)]7.A new MediaID.bin is created8.Try to restore the backup as usual using the advanced restore option and next the option restore an older backup created in this machine9.If done: it’s over!10.If it fails: Map a network driver at your LAN11.Copy the MediaId.bin file to the root of the previous mapped LAN driver12.Copy the whole folder BackupSet “aaaammdd” “xxxxxx” to this same driver13.Try to restore the backup as usual using the advanced restore option and next the option restore backup created in another machine14.At the next menu, point the backup folder at your LAN mapped driver and start the restore process15.Now you shall have your backup proper restored at the right machineGood Luck!John
