How to access File Type Associations Options
I work with SharePoint often. In SharePoint, there is an option to export a list to Excel, which is a command that calls a DLL on the server and then passes back an IQY query definition file, which the browser will offer to "Open or Save?" with a dialog. If you choose open, it automatically opens in Excel because Excel is the default handler for this file type. With me so far? I accidentally unchecked the "always prompt before opening" box in the IE download window. Now, the IQY file always opens in Excel. Because the IQY is just a query definition, this takes away my ability to send the generated query file to a coworker (via email or network), because I can't download the IQY file... it gets instantly passed to Excel. Stick with me, here's my question: In XP, I could find this file type in the list, and turn back on the checkmark for "Confirm Open After Download". However, this ability seems to be missing in Windows 7. How can I get a file type to prompt for download again in Windows 7?

Oh I finally found it. The UI is gone, but I found the registry location to set this option, thanks to How To Geek's website. Registry Path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute\{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} Within that key, you'll see a binary value for each file type that is set not to confirm open after download. Just delete that key (for example, mine said iqyfile). That is the same as turning "on" the Confirm Open after Download option in XP. If this was helpful, please vote by clicking the green triangle. Thanks Jon, but for some reason they don't include the same options there. For example, I cannot change a file type's default icon or right-click opens there, like we used to be able to with XP. I had Vista early on, I must never have noticed this before now. And I thought I had combed through every UI area :-) If this was helpful, please vote by clicking the green triangle.
