How to Backup and Restore A Folder's ACL (Windows 7)
Hi everyone, I wanted to ask for advice in relation to backing up and restoring known working copies of ACLs for folders using Windows 7. Recently upon installing a driver for update for the GEAR CD/DVD driver package (this is a component of Norton Ghost 15 that I use to backup my PC, http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php ), I encountered the permissions issue documented in the following support article: http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php?title=Correcting_Permissions_on_ProgramData_Folder I couldnt access the folders in ProgramData and programs that had components installed in those folders, no longer worked correctly. Using the suggested solution in this article I was unable to correct the issue (the instructions are not clear enough in explaining what needs to be corrected). Since I had no luck in correcting this, I restored my computer using Norton Ghost to an earlier image of the PC (which I had only created a few hours before the issue). Obviously, the issue was then resolved. In effort to prevent this from happening I found that the icacls command line utility can be used to backup and restore the ACLs using the following commands: Backup: icacls c:\ProgramData\* /save ProgramDataACL /t Restore: icacls c:\ProgramData\* /restore ProgramDataACL I have tried these commands using a Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit virtual machine and receive the following notifications at the commands prompt: Backup: C:\>icacls c:\ProgramData\* /save ProgramDataACL /t processed file: c:\ProgramData\Application Data processed file: c:\ProgramData\dbg processed file: c:\ProgramData\Desktop processed file: c:\ProgramData\Documents processed file: c:\ProgramData\Favorites processed file: c:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes processed file: c:\ProgramData\Microsoft processed file: c:\ProgramData\Start Menu processed file: c:\ProgramData\Templates processed file: c:\ProgramData\VMware c:\ProgramData\Application Data\*: Access is denied. Successfully processed 10 files; Failed processing 1 files ----------------------------------------------------------------- Restore: C:\>icacls c:\ProgramData /restore ProgramDataACL processed file: c:\ProgramData\Application Data processed file: c:\ProgramData\dbg processed file: c:\ProgramData\Desktop processed file: c:\ProgramData\Documents processed file: c:\ProgramData\Favorites processed file: c:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes processed file: c:\ProgramData\Microsoft processed file: c:\ProgramData\Start Menu processed file: c:\ProgramData\Templates processed file: c:\ProgramData\VMware Successfully processed 10 files; Failed processing 0 files ----------------------------------------------------------------- Are these notifications showing expected behaviour i.e. did the backup and restore operations complete successfully? I am asking since there are access denied prompts in the above results. I wish to use the above commands to prevent/resolve the permissions issue I experience when updating the GEAR driver for my Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64 bit PC (this is a native, non VM installation). If you require any further information to answer the above question, please let me know. Thanks in advance for any advice.
