How many copies do I need?
I've not been able to find a definitive answer - can anyone point me in the right direction? I have a desktop that stays at home, and a laptop that travels with me. Nobody else uses (or is allowed near) either of them. The desktop is always on, and is accessed from time to time from the laptop using remote desktop. Question is: Do I need a Win 7 licence for each machine, or can I use one for the two? At the moment, they have separate XP Pro licences because they came with it preinstalled.

Hi KeithYes, you will need to get a separate licensed copy for each machine.Right now is the time to buy because there are some good deals out there. I am assuming that you live in the UK. :)In the UK, full versions of Windows 7 Home Premium are being sold for 57% off, 63.99 ($105) which is less than the price for the upgrade version in the US which costs $120. In the US, the same full version costs $200 (122)The full version of Windows 7 Professional is offered at 32% off, 149.98 ($247)The full version of Ultimate is 26% off, 169 ($280) and in the US the full version costs $319 (193) Amazon.co.ukHope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

Thanks Ronnie (again, as so often!) I've already preordered two Home Premium, so I'm OK - but my daughter will have to buy her own ;) I'm paying some strange amount like 47.65 each for them. I think this is the "el strippo" version without IE, but that won't be a problem. I'm hoping Remote Desktop will be downloadable for the Home Premium, since I use it a fair bit. This pause while we wait for the release has me trying not to install new software that I'll have to install all over again in a matter of weeks. I'm keeping careful notes!

Hi Keith, Ronnie is correct that Amazon are allowing pre-orders for Windows 7 at some rather great prices for users in the UK. I have already got home premium ordered for 44.97 (I was one of the lucky ones to pre-order at the promotional price, like yourself) As for whether it will come with IE or not is a different matter, have a look at the site below for the latest info from Microsoft (I'ts currently the third blog down) Microsoft on the issues

I'm keeping careful notes! Keith - Actually... Last I heard, Microsoft was NOT going to be shipping the "E" version after all. It's now back to shipping Windows 7 with a ballot system of some sort that will download and install another browser and make it your default. From what I've read - Remote Desktop is included in ALL versions of Windows 7. You can remote into another computer with Starter. BUT... You need Professional or above to HOST a remote desktop session. In which case, you'll need to have at least one Pro license - the one on your desktop. The laptop can be Home Premium. On the positive side of things - instead of cancelling your order, you can do an Anytime Upgrade from Home Premium on your desktop to Professional. Not sure what the price difference is, but I'm going to go out on a limb it would be cheaper than buying Professional on it's own.
